  1. PowerPoint • Step by Step

  2. Here are the five rules you need to remember to create amazing Powerpoint presentations: 1. No more than six words on a slide. EVER. There is no presentation so complex that this rule needs to be broken. 2. No cheesy images. Use professional stock photo images. 3. No dissolves, spins or other transitions. 4. Sound effects can be used a few times per presentation, but never use the sound effects that are built in to the program. Instead, rip sounds and music from CDs and leverage the Proustian effect this can have. If people start bouncing up and down to the Grateful Dead, you’ve kept them from falling asleep, and you’ve reminded them that this isn’t a typical meeting you’re running. 5. Don’t hand out print-outs of your slides. They don’t work without you there.

  12. Lots of slide layouts to select from in PowerPoint. There are layouts for title slides, text, bullet boxes, as well as frames for images. To use a layout click on the style you need. You can change the frames each time you place a new slide.

  16. Bring in some ART Insert > Picture

  17. Insert Picture menu opens up a finder. Select picture and insert.

  18. Pictures must be formatted correctly. Use JPG format 200 ppi 1000 picas wide or 800 picas tall. That gets you a nice clear picture that isn’t too big.

  19. Resize the picture by grabbing the anchor point on the corners. To keep the dimensions correct hold down the shift key.

  20. There are also a lot of themes to select from. Themes do a lot of the design work for you, but they are not always the answer. Again, remember the Alamo -- I mean Audience.

  21. Using the formatting palette with a blank slide you can select your own backgrounds.

  22. You can get really fancy with the backgrounds and images, but remember each slide has only one center of impact. Keep your messages short and to the point!
