The tension between senior executives manifested itself between the departments that they managed. Early on – conflict increased and almost daily issues hit us life one wave after another coming over the bow; customers learned how to work the conflict to their advantage! 42. The Impact of Marriages on Society As go marriages, so go families . . . As go families so go churches, companies and communities . . . As go communities, so go states . . . As go states, so go nations . . . As go nations, so go entire civilizations . . . (Gary J. Oliver, Ph.D.)

43. WHY an NWA Healthy Marriage Initiative?

44. While Northwest Arkansas Is a Corporate Leader on a National Level . . . NWA is the home of two Fortune 100 companies Ranked #8 in the nation by Forbes for Best Places for Business and Careers Ranked by Forbes in the Top 10 places to live in America Ranked #13 in Inc.com’s list of top 200 Boomtown Named the Nation's Top-Performing Metropolitan Area For Job Creation (The Milken Institute) NWA according to the statistics is a great place to work and live: Additional stats: Benton and Washington counties grew 47 percent between 1990 and 2000 Even during national economic turmoil, Northwest Arkansas has experienced 8.2 percent job growth, while unemployment in Fayetteville is typically around 2 percent, compared to the national rate of 4.6 percent. In June 2007, Business Week Magazine ranked Rogers as 18th in the 25 best affordable suburbs in the South. But underneath all the success, lies a real social problem. Arkansas has one of the highest divorce rates in the nation (54% vs. 50% for the entire US) and according to the statistics Benton and Washington counties are leading the state. And it’s for these reasons that a little over a year ago CRE received a five year,2.7 million dollar federal grant to provide pre-marital education and marriage enrichment for the six counties here in Northwest Arkansas with an emphasis on Benton and Washington counties.   NWA according to the statistics is a great place to work and live: Additional stats: Benton and Washington counties grew 47 percent between 1990 and 2000 Even during national economic turmoil, Northwest Arkansas has experienced 8.2 percent job growth, while unemployment in Fayetteville is typically around 2 percent, compared to the national rate of 4.6 percent. 45. NWA Is Also a National Leader in Another Important Area The United States has the highest divorce rate in the developed world. For over 10 years Arkansas has had one of the highest divorce rates in the United States. Currently Northwest Arkansas has one of the highest divorce rates in the USA.

46. Why Is Marriage and Divorce Any of My Business? -90% of individuals will marry at least once -2.3 million marriages every year -1.4 million divorces every year -Nearly 50% of marriages end in divorce What impacts my employees OUTSIDE of work . . . impacts how they perform AT work!

47. The High Cost of Divorce on Companies Over the years it's become increasingly clear that unhealthy relationships in general and divorce in particular has had a negative impact on the overall productivity in corporate America but recent research is beginning to empirically identify just how significant that impact is.  Over the years it's become increasingly clear that unhealthy relationships in general and divorce in particular has had a negative impact on the overall productivity in corporate America but recent research is beginning to empirically identify just how significant that impact is.

48. The Social and Financial of Divorce The social cost of divorce -High impact on the children of divorced parents -Increased spouse abuse and child abuse The health cost of divorce -Physical -Emotional -Psychological -Relational The financial cost of divorce and unwed child-bearing -United States $112 billion per year -Arkansas $471 million per year

49. The Impact of Divorce on Productivity -A recently divorced worker will lose up to 3 years of peak productivity -In the year following a divorce a worker loses 168 hours of time on the job -This equates to being gone 21 workdays or over four weeks -Employees thus lose 8% of their productivity after a divorce

50. Contributing factors: Increased absenteeism Increased presenteeism Decreased health Increased anxiety and stress Increased EAP, medical usage and health insurance costs Thinking about absenteeism and presenteeism, the year following divorce, employees lost an average of over 168 hours of work time, which is equivalent to four weeks. This means that employees are absent for four weeks or over 8% of their annual time on the job. 51. Affairs in the workplace Four times more likely to abuse alcohol More likely to resort to physical abuse & violence to resolve tensions at home Not usually one time events Couples in failing relationships are more likely to resort to physical abuse or violence to resolve tensions at home, and subsequent domestic violence costs Corporate American up to 7.9 million workdays of lost productivity annually. Unhappily married couples are almost four times more likely to have a partner abusing alcohol than in happily married couples. Those with alcohol problems skip or miss work 30% more than those without such problems. Divorce and Marriage are not one-time events. In fact remarriages face greater risk of divorce than first marriages. 54. Relational Pathway to Decreased Profits

55. How Do Healthy Marriages Help My Company? Greater commitment to employers Lower rates of absenteeism Lower rates of presenteeism More dependable More motivated More stable Increased creativity Increased productivity Happier married couples are healthier which can lead to lower rates of health service utilization and fewer chronic health problems. This reduces health costs for employers. Immune system functioning is improved for happy and healthy married couples (Waite & Gallagher, 2000) Couples in successful relationships have improved immune systems. Males are 18 months younger than chronological age and women are 6 months younger. Marriage Premium = earn more, reduced job turnover, lower rates of absenteeism, more dependable and more motivated. Source: Gallagher, 2002/Waite & Gallagher, 2000/Corporate Research Council, 2002/Curtis, 2006. 56. Reduced health insurance costs Increase retention: 150% of blue-collar total benefits package 250% for management Happy and healthy married people have reduced job turnover rates. When considering that it costs 150% of a blue-collar worker’s total benefit package to replace him or her, and 250% of a managerial and sales professional benefit package, it makes a great deal of sense to reduce turnover and invest in employee relationship wellness. 57. We now know that what helps a person be more effective in the “family” room also helps them be more effective in the “work” room. Many of the skills involved in having a healthy marriage are the same skills that make for a more effective employee: - Emotional Intelligence - Empathy - Relational Intelligence - Communication - Conflict Management - Listening Skills Employees with healthy marriages are more likely to have healthier relationships in other areas of their lives.

58. Potential Benefits of Healthy Marriages to a Company Many studies have examined the return on investment (ROI) attributed to employer-sponsored programs targeted at increasing workplace health and reducing stress. ROI studies have attributed $1.50-$6.50 for every $1.00 spent on employee and wellness programs and $1.40-$4.90 for every $1.00 spent on stress reduction programs. 65. Final Thoughts Relationships are everyone's business Relationships are corporate America’s business Relationships are influenced by company policies and practices Healthy marriages can increase profits And . . . This is why relationships are no longer only the realm of clergy, counselors, EAP’s, and social workers. Relationships are incredibly influenced for better or for worse by the policies and practices found within the corporate environment. To continue to be increasingly profitable we will do well to realize that business takes place inside and outside the workplace. Employees in healthy marriages can increase profit, while employees in failing relationships decrease profit. Relationships are incredibly influenced for better or for worse by the policies and practices found within the corporate environment. Emotional and relational intelligence are more predictive of success than intellectual intelligence.
