  1. Eielson’s AMAZINGBASE R A C E Candi Dierenfield, 4-H Youth Development University of Alaska Fairbanks CES Deborah Conklin, Director of Youth Programs Eielson AFB, Alaska

  2. What to bring: • Race Qualifications: • Bike in good working condition (no training wheels) • Helmet • Tennis shoes • Able to ride bike 4 miles • Back Pack

  3. Why We Did the Program • LOTS of bikes out after the long winter, kids riding to and from school • Youth not sure about proper hand signals to cross a street, etc. • Fun 4-H program • Learn to use GPS • 3 day camp • Fit Factor!!!

  4. The Planning Process • Identified locations about 3 – 4 miles from Youth Center • Drove the course to look for obstacles • Plan for lunch – purchased boxed lunches from our flight kitchen • Sandwich, granola bar, water, fruit, chips. • Wrote clues and used 4-H bicycle safety curriculum to design detours, challenges, road blocks, etc. • Water!!! Plan water stops for the long bike ride • Charged $5 to help cover lunch • Fit Factor

  5. Using a GPS in your RACE • Plot the points before hand • Use the plotted points in your clues • Clue: Where you can go after school to do sports, crafts, 4-H and more! GPS Point #3 • Safety tip: have youth put the GPS in their back pack so that they are not trying to ride and look at it at the same time… also, attach the carrier handles to the units if they come with one.

  6. Terminology Detour:: A choice between two different ways to accomplish a goal or reach a destination. On the surface, one may seem easy but involves some sort of twist; the other may seem difficult but in the end may be the quicker choice. Pit Stop: The final destination for each leg of a race, at which point a Team must "clock in." Points area awarded based on 1st, 2nd 3rd, etc. Roadblock: A task in which only one member of the two-person Team may participate; in most cases, the non-participant must wait for the participant to accomplish the goal. Route Marker: Yellow and red flag that marks the locations of further instructions.

  7. The Amazing Race Day 1 * Run 8 teams of 3. • 10:00 Meet at Youth Center – welcome and Race Rules - Orientation on bicycle safety: street signs, crossing RR tracks, wearing a helmet and arm signals • Ice Breaker: name game/chicken toss… • Beginning clue: Sledding, skiing, snow shoeing and more. During the winter is what this place has in store. • 10:15 Bike to Ski Hill, receive next clue (Design team t-shirt) • 11:15 Learn to use the GPS unit • 11:30 Detour: It’s your choice, a Map or GPS to find the coolest prize today! They are here to assist you in your travel and stay! Now – on your way! (This clue is for you!!!!) • 12:00 Pit Stop – Mandatory Rest (lunch) - Lunch and then next clue to obstacle course • 12:30 Each team member must travel the obstacle course following the map instruction exactly to receive next clue • 1:30 Pit Stop – Mandatory Rest (snack/water break) • 1:45 Group Feedback/Progress Report • Last clue: Where youth can go after school to do sports, crafts, 4-H and more! • 2:00 Bike back to Youth Center

  8. ROADBLOCK: • Rock Dodge! Cheer on your teammates as you each maneuver through the obstacle course of rocks to dodge. You all get one time to hit a rock, but if you hit two, you must start over again!

  9. POINTS – Who gets them & how? • We gave points based on how well they used their hand signals (1st = 5 points, 2nd = 4 points, etc.) • They really worked together to make sure their team all used hand signals, etc. • Winner of each challenge = (1st = 5 points, 2nd = 4 points, etc.)

  10. Challenge… It must float, it can not sink! You have the tools and just these tools to build the Titanic. At 1:15 we will get ready to see - Will your boat float?? • Team Boat Building Challenge – using card board boxes and duct tape. The boat must hold one person. The boats and teams go to the swimming pool and the teams race their boats across the width of the pool. One team member must be in the boat and maneuver the boat as far as they can across the pool and back.

  11. Detour: • Where can you find the Lady of the Lake? At GPS Point #8. Bike there with your team. You will find a camera with your team number on it. Take a picture of each team member by the lake and return with your camera to GPS Point #9. • You will find a bucket and some fun filled balloons! You must break them all to fill your bucket. Then as a team and with an adult, paddle the boat to the designated point. First to return will get the most points!
