Do your research first! • Get a good sense of how the project fits with the philosophy and mission of your agency. • Funders want to know that a project reinforces the overall direction of an organization, and they may need to be convinced that the case for the project is compelling. • Collect background data on your organization and on the need to be addressed so that your arguments are well-documented. • The need that the proposal is addressing must also be documented. • These concepts must be well-articulated in the proposal. • .

  4. The Audience • Not your advisor! • Imagine a wicked smart person with no background in your sub-area. • As yourself: How can I make the reader finish reading and say: “This is great for my organization!”

I believe that my research portfolio in X, field experience in Y and proven excellence in Z make me a strong candidate for the listed position.

I AM A BIG DEAL • My research interests are situated at the intersection of comparative political economy and sociology, with a focus on the politics of diffusion of economic development ideas and institutions through international organizations and other actors. • My senior thesis is supervised by professor X from the Y department and examines the diffusion of neoliberalism in Spain and Romania across several decades. The thesis attempts to make a threefold contribution to debates on Z. First… • Tips: make your voice sound scholarly here. Avoid educated incoherenceand jargon oversupply, though. The plan of work • How your research will be conducted(showcase your methodological skills here; be as specific as possible) • The timetable for the project: milestones; feasibility • The anticipated resultsand how best to evaluate the results; • Staffing and volunteer needs, including deployment of existing staff and hires.

  8. budget • Sketch out the broad outlines of the budget to be sure that the costs are in reasonable proportion to the outcomes you anticipate. • If it appears that the costs will be prohibitive, even with a foundation grant, you should then scale back your plans or adjust them to remove the least cost-effective expenditures. • Itemize expenses in a table.
