Documentary – ‘Downside…Up’ • During a week of filming, Fouk Aladeh documented the lives of nine homeless youth, each of whom surprised him with their insights and intellect. • “We went to the street and talked to young people,” says Fouk Aladeh. “Those kids trusted me and understood what I wanted. I wanted to let them give their voices to the community.” • One was a “walking encyclopedia” with a sharp mind for municipal politics. Another was a gifted pianist who staged an impromptu recital at a local café. Another has aspirations to become mayor “and make a difference in the world,” says Fouk Aladeh. • When Fouk Aladeh first ventured under the bridge at Stirling and Courtland streets – or to the abandoned factory and cemetery where his other subjects took shelter – he didn’t know what his camera would capture. He learned that there are no easy explanations of why some youth take to the streets. • “They all have different stories,” says the filmmaker. “Their voices are an important element of our community. These are real human beings with dreams and goals and hopes, and they deserve to be heard. Hopefully this film will help them be heard.”

The Glass Ceiling to Success • North American society has encouraged lower-status individuals to aspire highly while denying them equal access to opportunity • Our culture implies that success is available to anyone who has the necessary intelligence and drive • This success is regardless of class, ethnicity and gender
Homeless Youth As Deviants • Lower-status youth experience frustration over their failure to acquire middle-class status • They adapt to this frustration by forming deviant subcultures that reject the middle-class • This deviant behaviour is common during the age of transition from youth to adult
Deviant Appearance • Tattoos are a way to increase an individuals attachment to alternative social groups • Deviant appearances and tattoos are used in a way to mark their disassociation from mainstream culture
Applying Theories • You will be split up into groups of 2-3 • You will be assigned one of the developmental theories we studied in class • It is your group’s task to use specific examples from the Downside…Up homeless youth documentary and apply your theory to the situation • You MUST use specific information from the theory as well as specific examples from the documentary in your analysis • Your answer should be at least a page in length
