Types of search engine • Keyword • Handles complex search terms but too many results can be time consuming • Spider search principle • http://www.google.co.uk • http://www.bing.com (helps you search) • Directories (index based) • Fewer results but often of better quality • http://dir.yahoo.com • http://www.dmoz.org • http://yippy.com (categories results)

Types of search engine • Multi-search engines • Search many search engines at once but only display top results from each search engine • http://www.searchboth.co.uk/ • http://www.graball.com • Speciality search engines/subject gateways • Trustworthy and relevant but be sure level is correct • http://www.bized.co.uk/

  6. Search terms • What should I type into the search box? • Break down your topic • Avoid general terms – be specific • If unsure use directory engines (e.g. Yahoo) or try Bing or yippy, which help with search terms. • What search terms might you use for these topics? • Global warming? • Music?

  7. Search tips • Use the advanced search feature in Google and other search engines to narrow your search:

  8. Activity • Repeat your earlier searches using advanced search features. Think carefully about your search terms!

Some more search tips! • Putting phrases or full names in quotes (“”) will tell the search engine to search for those terms as a whole • Using + means all hits must include the word and – means all hits must not include this word • The Google advanced search field does much of the above for you

  10. Evaluating information Is the information you have found • Reliable? • Up to date? • Who is the information aimed at? Please remember: • Do you trust the creator of the web page? • Many pages are not kept up-to-date • The Internet has NO quality control

Evaluating sources of information • Check the URL (internet address) .com (Commercial sites ) .org (Non profit making organisation) .ac (Education) .gov (Government ) • Who Published the page? • Look for reliable sources of information • www.bbc.co.uk • www.nhs.uk Could we ask students to match left and right columns here?

  13. References: • All information sources must be acknowledged in your work. • Reference your work in a bibliography. • Sessions on bibliographies and plagiarism are available at this learning centre. • Guides to referencing are on Blackboard
