Key features of IBSS • IBSS extends back to 1951 • Over half a century of key research in the social sciences • Also covers related interdisciplinary subjects • Over 2 million records in the database • 50% of records added since 1998 contain abstracts • Links to full text available for articles in over 700 journals

Easy Search Screen • Search for words or phrases in the record title, keyword or abstract • 50% of articles added since 1998 contain a searchable abstract • searches can be limited to titles only • Search for authors or editors • eg: KEYNES_JM or KEYNES_J* or KEYNES • Year range • select from the pull-down boxes • default is current year plus the previous 3 years • Use ‘redisplay’ button to change results display format • Choice is: Title only: Title, authors & source (default); Full record • Also use ‘redisplay’ for downloading options

Advanced Search Screen • Additional search options • You may need to scroll down to see all the options • Journal Title or ISSN, Volume and Issue • Search for the exact journal title or for a word or phrase in the journal title • Corporate Author • Book Details • Search for the exact title, a word or phrase in the title, or the ISBN • Keywords - Subject and Geographic • Keywords should be selected from the defined list • List obtained by selecting ‘Keywords’ prompt on search form • Searches may be limited by • Date, Document, Language, Discipline

Limiting Searches in IBSS • Limit by date • Select a year range (default is current year plus previous 3) • Or choose material added to the database since a particular date • Limit by document type • Choose Article, Book, Review or Chapter • Limit by language of publication • Select languages from list • Limit by discipline • Anthropology • Economics • Political Science • Sociology

IBSS Subject & Geographic Keywords List • Use the alphabetical list of subject terms to identify keywords to use in a search • Full Keyword list obtained by selecting Advanced Search screen, clicking on ‘Keywords’, and requesting the full list • MT - major term LT- larger term ST- smaller term

Searching by Subject & Geographic Keywords • Identify keywords for your search from the keyword list • Remember Larger Terms (LT) will find more results than Major Terms (MT) or Smaller Terms (ST) • Enter your keywords in the Subject & Geographic Keywords box on the Advanced Search Screen • eg: adopted children • Geographic keywords may also be entered • These are typically country names or other major political or geographical regions

Access to Full Text Articles • Immediate delivery of full text electronic articles from Ingenta and other sources • Availability indicated by link in results list • Most articles are in PDF format • View PDF files using Acrobat Reader • Articles can be viewed on screen, printed or downloaded to disk • Full text material available from wide range of different publishers • Free access to full text if item is subscribed to • Articles from non-subscribed journals may be purchased
