  2. April 10th – Syntax (Copy Notes) • Diction is the choice of words • Syntax is how we arrange the chosen words to express thoughts (word order) • With diction and syntax, there are countless ways a writer can express the same thought

(Pick 3 to Copy) • Which is the most clear, which is the most interesting, • Why? • Structured to create interest, clarity, pace (sentence length), rhythm, emphasis • Why “mystical” for the way Yoda speaks – he is a special character, structured so you can sense his power and see he is set apart • Emphasis is always at the beginning of the line or at the end of the line (could be a few words on either end) • (active and passive voice – who has the power in the sentences “ • I went to the store in the morning. • In the morning, I went to the store. • I drove to the store this morning. • After sunrise, I went to the store. • To the store I went in the morning. • In the morning to the store I went. • In the morning to the store went I. • This morning I awoke and dressed and hustled to the store.

  5. April 10th - Syntax • As writers, we tend to use certain patterns to arrange our words into sentences • This contributes to the writing style • A writer’s choice of word arrangement may contribute to the meaning

  6. April 10th - Syntax • I went to the store in the morning. • To the store I went in the morning. • In the morning to the store went I. • Where is the focus or emphasis placed in each sentence?

  7. (Underline the focus) • I went to the store in the morning. • To the store I went in the morning. • In the morning to the store went I. • Focus shifts from person, to place, to time

  8. April 10th - Syntax • A writer can choose what element to emphasize by its placement in the sentence • The information is the same, but the emphasis changes • This then affects the meaning in the context of the larger passage

  9. A bunch of flowers I see, and also a tree. A face I see with the blonde shepherd farmer. Certain facial features are visible to me and little lambs I see. Two houses there are and two eyes to see. I see a hand on the grass. • I see certain facial • Flowers, a tree, a blonde shepherd farmer, little lambs, two houses, two eyes, a hand, and grass make a face visible to me.
