Pre-treatment of oral cancer • Actively discourage smoking & betel nutuse • Encourage moderation of alcohol intake • Health promotion & education on Oral Cancer • Provide regular check-ups for edentulous ± institutionalizedelderly & otherwise high-risk non-attenders • Early diagnosis: • Be vigilant & suspicious • Always examine mucosa as well as teeth • Refer all high-risk lesions on discovery • Monitor low-risk pre-malignant lesions • Perform biopsy appropriately

Dentists should identify those patients with risk factor for oral cancer • Use medical history that includes lifestyle questions • Staff should be trained to ensure that patients complete medical history parts fully • Practice policy on oral cancer examinations should be formulated and understood by all staff • Accurate and comprehensive medical history & dental treatment records must be kept • Develop procedures to review and update medical history at each new course of treatment • Dental clearance

  4. During treatment • Ensure good oral hygiene • Moral support

After treatment of oral cancer • Manage simple denture problems after surgery • Management of post-complications of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy • Mucositis • Xerostomia • Osteoradionecrosis • Monitor for recurrence, new pre-malignant lesions & second primary tumours • Monitor for cervical (neck) and lung metastases • Maintain morale of & provide additional support to patients & their relatives • Maintain good oral hygiene
