  1. 7th Grade End of Course Exam in Civics What do Parents Need to Know?

  2. What is it? The Justice Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Education Act was passed by the Florida legislature and signed into law by CS/HB 105 in 2010. Its implementation begins THIS at the end of the school year with the first 7th grade End of Course Exam.

  3. Why? “A third of Americans can't name any of the three branches of government. Fewer than half understand what separation of powers is, and twice as many can name a judge on American Idol than the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Survey after survey has shown that Americans lack basic knowledge about how their government works. That's something Florida lawmakers hope to change.” Tamp Bay Times September 24, 2013

  4. What will the Test be Like?

  5. Levels of Questions Low – fact recall Moderate– analyze or explain High – apply what you know

  6. Example –LOW

  7. Example –MEDIUM

  8. Example –HIGH

  9. How Much Does the Test Count? • The test will be given on-line during the first 10 days of May. The percentage score will be factored into the total grade for the civics course at a value of 30% of the student’s final grade.

  10. What Can I Do to Help My Child? • A few suggestions… • Talk with your child about current events and government issues. • Review vocabulary with your child. (They have word walls!) • Study with your child and review for vocab and unit exams. • Read and discuss the textbook or workbook with your child. • Review daily bell ringer sample test questions with your child. • Ask your child if she/he needs help! • Tutoring is available on Tuesday at 8:30am in your Civics classroom. • Stay in touch with the teacher when you have concerns.
