Timeline • *1460: Vasco Da Gama was born in Sines, PortugalHe came from a noble Portuguese family and his father was a distinguished soldier.Gama was well educated and was taught several languages, physics, geometry,mathematics and astronomy*1492: King John Paul II of Portugal sent Gama to Setubal, on the Lisbon coast to seize French ships for French raids against Portuguese ships • *1497: (January): Vasco Da Gama was to find a sea route to the East Indies *1498. (May 20): The voyage of discovery reached its destination-the Indies and Calcutta, India*1499. (September): Gama returns to Portugal, with pride. Made "Admiral of the Indian Ocean"*1519: The title of "Count" is bestowed on Vasco Da Gama*1539: The remains of Gama are returned to Portugal and his body is lain to rest in Vidigueira

  3. Focus • He was Focused when he was trying to find a sea route to the East Indies.

  4. Risk Taking • When he sailed east from Portugal many people thought it would be impossible because they thought the Indian Ocean was not connected to any other seas.

  5. Perseverance • Both time that Vasco Da Gama went to India to set up trading posts, many of his sailors died of scurry but he didn’t give up the voyages.

  6. Preparedness • At a young age he leaned how to fish, swim and sail. At school(1484-1492) he studied astronomy and navigation.

  9. A diary of Vasco Da Gama • July 8th 1497 • Today is our first day of sailing to the East and I am feeling excited. The weather was bad so the sailors were throwing up. • Now the weather is calm and it’s quiet. • December 25th 1497 • We reached the coast of Natal. we ate the food and drinks in here. And we took food, drinks and repaired the ship. • May 20th 1498 • Finally we reached the East Indies I was so excited because it took ages to find the way.
