  3. Objectives • Identify key duties of some of the 15 executive departments • Analyze the role of the Executive Branch in current events

  5. Executive Departments and the Cabinet • Executive Departments • 5 under GW, 15 under Obama • Each with a distinct specialty • President appoints the leaders of the Department (called Secretaries) but the Senate approves them. • Leader of the Department of Justice is the Attorney General

  6. Cabinet Departments

  7. Department of State • Foreign Policy is its specialty • Secretary of State is Hillary Clinton • Ambassadors are the highest ranking US representatives • Live & work in an embassy • Consuls represent our economic interests • Work at a consulate – found in most cities • Keep track of people traveling to and from the US • Passports – we travel out, visas – they travel here

Department of Defense • In charge of our armed forces] • Operates bases all over the world • Used in relief efforts from natural disasters – Katrina, 2004 tsunami, Haiti, oil spill off Louisiana • Secretary of Defense is always a civilian • Non-military control over the armed forces • Joint Chiefs of Staff • Highest ranking generals of each branch of the military

Other Executive Departments • Congress can make and combine departments as needed • Department of Homeland Security – made after 9/11 • Protect us from future terror attacks • Provides us with help after disasters, like Katrina • Treasury Department • Promotes economic stability in the United States • Taxes, stamps, budgets, counterfeiters

  10. Other Executive Departments, continued • Department of Justice • Enforces US laws • Prevent and control crime • Department of the Interior • National Parks, etc. • Department of Energy • Energy policy, nuclear facility inspection
