  • Learn to blend sounds to read words

  • Read lots of specially written books to embed sounds learned during phonics session

  • This is decoding

  • Children talk about what they have read to show they understand

  • Listen to and discuss ideas with adults and peers to deepen their understanding

  • This is comprehending
