  3. How does it work? • Children learn 44 sounds • Learn to blend sounds to read words • Read lots of specially written books to embed sounds learned during phonics session • This is decoding

  4. How does it work? • Children talk about what they have read to show they understand • Listen to and discuss ideas with adults and peers to deepen their understanding • This is comprehending

  6. Grapheme A g rapheme is a sound written down · English has more than 15 0 e.g . ee,y,ea,e. A complex code!

  8. Children are taught to form letters in a specific way using mnemonics e.g. • M -Maisie, mountain, mountain • A -Round the apple, down the leaf • S -Slither down the snake
