Pantani isconsidered ,along with Gino Bartali, one of the greatest climbers of time. Afterhisdeath , Lance Armstrong saidthat Pantani was the greatest climber of alltime, thesameCharlyGaulsaid Pantani wasprobablyeverstrongerthanhim.

  2. Pantani’s Career After having competed very young in football, received as a gift a bicycle from his grandfather Sotero. He decided to membership at the G.C. FaustoCoppi of Cesenatico and immediately showed undoubted qualities of great climber, winning many races. In 1990 he was third in the Tour of Italy amateurs, in 1991 the second and in 1992 he won ahead of Vincenzo Galati and Andrea Noah. In 1993 he participated in the first Tour of Italy for professionals, retired after a few steps to tendonitis. In 1994 it passed to the Carrera del ds David Boifava. The explosion occurred as a professional cyclist in the Tour of Italy that year, with stage victories in Merano, Aprica and second place in the final standings, behind YevgenyBerzin. In the fraction of 'Aprica snapped on the Mortirolo, leaving behind the Russian YevgenyBerzin and Spaniard Miguel Indurain: After you took a deep breath and have put people back to Indurain, at the crossing of Santa Cristina hung up going to win the stage. Making its debut at the Tour de France closed third overall, behind Miguel Indurain and the Latvian PyotrUgrumov, also won the white jersey for best young rider. In the stage of Val Thorens, in spite of a bad fall, he managed to remove all the strongest and reach the finish line third.

  3. 1996-1997: the return and the third place at the Tour Between July and September 1996 Pantani racing in a dozen official competitions in preparation for the next season. For 1997 he moved to the new Mercatone A team sponsored by Romano Overview and built around the Romagna to point to the grand tours. But bad luck was still around the corner: the Tour of Italy Pantani suffered another accident, in interlocutory stage of the race, the descent of Chiunzi crossing at km 182, because of a cat that had crossed the street to passage of the group. He managed to finish the stage thanks to teammates, but the hospital found to have suffered a laceration an inch in muscle fibers of the left thigh. He abandoned the race. This time, quickly recovered and returned to riding in the Tour the same year, where he fought long for the yellow jersey, bringing two more stage wins, yet the Alped'Huez, pulling Virenque and Ullrich, and Morzine. Specifically covered Alped'Huez ascent in 37 minutes and 35 seconds, a record. Despite prevailing on the climbs in the Alps and the Pyrenees, was passed in the standings by Ullrich, who managed to recover the time lost thanks to the time-trial stages, in which was stronger, bringing the yellow jersey to Paris; Pantani he finished in third place in the final standings behind even Richard Virenque.

  4. 2000: The secondcoming Pantanireturned to racing in 2000, but despite the formal requirements, the major difficulty is psychological. Mark struggled to get going and prepare for the Giro became more fragmented to become non-existent. The problem of the cocaine was later passed, but in the Giro, the physical preparation was not suitable for a race so hard. One is now in Mercatone thought of a tour without Mark, with Garzelli captain, but, surprisingly, Marco participated in the tour, making themselves available for Garzelli, a young promising. In fact, the nine seats in the Mercatone One for the Giro were for Garzelli, De Paoli, Veil, Zaina, Brignoli, Borgheresi, Forconi, Fontanelli and Podenzana which is sacrificed to make way for Pantani. His evidence was clear for its shape is not optimal. Was off and on slopes not shine more like its heyday. Resources instead sull'Izoard where the captain stepped gregarious Garzelli, then the winner of the general classification, and went to grab a second place in a stage that had high hopes for its rebirth. Go all the Tour, where he met Lance Armstrong, future undisputed winner of the following editions (terminated following the doping scandal 2012). Since the first villages in the Pyrenees and the Pirate accumulates a considerable delay. It redeems the Alps: July 13 in a stage of Mont Ventoux sprinted the American getting a stage victory.

  5. Subsequently, Armstrong, openly stated in an interview that he had left the victory to the Pirate and this will trigger the anger Pantani. On July 17, in the stage of CourchevelPantani trip: meet Richard Virenque and Armstrong. After a few km off Virenque and remain only Pantani and Armstrong. After Roberto Heras and Javier Otxoa reach the two, Pantani attacked leaving behind their opponents in 5 km from the finish. Reaches and José María Jiménez off and went on to win solo, pulling the same Armstrong of less than 51 seconds, but his exultation, so contained, it seems to hide a grim truth: that will be his last professional victory. The next day, in the stage of Morzine with hard Col de Joux Plane shortly before the finish, Pantani attacked on the first climb, trying to close the gap in the standings. The lack of collaboration with fellow escape the heat and bowel problems (diarrhea), however, forced him to retire from the "Grand Boucle". "I tried to blow the Tour, I jumped me," he said after crossing the finish line with 13'44 "behind the stage winner Richard Virenque. In 2001 and 2002 he took part in the Tour of Italy but getting poor results. Pantani decides to retire causing the gossip media, who believe that Pantani has found a way to bypass the anti-doping the next day. Get two more wins in critérium, including the van AchtChaam.

  6. 2001-2003:The Depression Now more and more prostrate in the moral, partly because of the ongoing process for sporting fraud, filed against him for offenses dating back to 1995 , participates in the Tour of Italy 2001 but withdrew before the 19 th round. At the Tour de France instead of his team is not invited. Meanwhile, begins to be away from the image of a professional rider and between suspected and processes of sports justice, where they condemn and then perform (for the non-existence of the crime at the time, while confirming the merits of the use of substances doping ), Pantani is unable to find the serenity needed to get back to racing. In 2003 he returned to prepare for both the Giro and the Tour in the Tour of Italy fought head to head with the best coming fourteenth in the overall standings (after the disqualification of the thirteenth RaimondasRumsas, 6 º). During the stage of the Monte Zoncolan responded to the shooting of Gilberto Simoni, who had removed all but began the chase and the only one to hold his pace was Stefano Garzelli, but the energy costs fell in the final and finished fifth. In the stage of Cascata del Toce made his last shot at 3 km to being taken over by Simoni and finishing eighth. In a final interview at the end of the Tour of Italy reveals the possibility of its possible participation in the Tour de France with another formation, since the Mercatone One was excluded. But when the agreement with the Bianchi team of Jan Ullrich seems a done deal, it seems to be the same Pantani do not want to take part in the Tour Following forfeit the rest of the season, not taking part in the Vuelta a España. The June 21, 2003 Pantani went into the clinic, "Linden Park" Teolo in Veneto, specializing in the treatment of depression and alcohol dependence, emerging in early July to continue care with personal physicians.

  7. The Death On 14 February 2004, Marco Pantani was found dead in room D5 of residence "Le Rose" in Rimini. An autopsy revealed that death was caused by pulmonary edema and brain, resulting in an overdose of cocaine.
