  3. Introduction This project required us to obtain a network drawing and determine the type of equipment used in the network. We were to determine, as well as possible, if the installation meets the National Electric Code Standards. The network diagram used in this project was done by Garry Meadows from the layout of his office. The network is a 10/100Mbps 802.3 Ethernet system used for sharing, accessing and storing data for use by office employees. All equipment is AC powered and connected to common 120VAC wall adapters; thus making it difficult to determine whether internal power regulations are met. All hardware, not desktop related, is rack mounted in a gray 23” steel, welded equipment rack. The internal network connections were run through the false ceiling to which Garry did not have easy access. Therefore, we will use information we were able to obtain to complete this project to the best of our abilities.

  5. Element Description • 3Com NBX Call Processing Center- IP PBX Phone System used to connect all internal telephones as well as offering external access to the PSTN as well as to other buildings in the company using IP connectivity. • Prestige 944s Cable Modem- Used to offer ISP connectivity to the company. • Watchguard 1000 Firewall- Used to protect the network from unauthorized access. • Patch Panel- Used as a cross connection point for all work station computers and servers. It electrically connects all elements. • 10BaseT Wall Plate- Offers an easy connection point for network elements. • 3Com Super Stack Switch- Used to allow network elements to communicate without reducing the efficiency of the network. • HP Pro Curve Switch- Used to allow network elements to communicate without reducing the efficiency of the network. • HP Server- Used to store data and software to be used by business employees. • HP Color Printer- Used by the employees to print documents. • 3Com NBX Telephone- Used to place calls.

  6. Network Cabling The following are the cable specifications used in the network. The same cable was used for all elements. • Cat5e • Plenum Rated- CM (General Purpose) • 4 Pair Cable • AWG-24 solid strand • RJ-45 crimp connections • Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable • Maximum untwisting of less than ½ inch • Minimum bend radius of the cable will not exceed 4x the outside diameter (about 1 inch) • Maximum of 100 meters • Attenuation of 24db • Pair 2 and 3 (pins 1-2, 7-8) used for data transfer • Cables are designed as straight through, meaning there are not crossovers designed in the connectors. • All cables are labeled with near and far end connections for ease of troubleshooting.

  7. TIA/EIA 568 Descriptions TIA/EIA-568-A Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling TIA/EIA-568-A-1 Addendum 1, Propagation delay for delay skew TIA/EIA-568-A-2 Addendum 2, Corrections & Additions to ITA-568-A TIA/EIA-568-A-3 Addendum 3, Hybrid Cable TIA/EIA-568-A-4 Addendum 4, Patchcord Qualification Testing TIA/EIA-568-A-5 Addendum 5, Additional transmission specifications for 4-pair 100 Ohm Cat 5e cabling TIA/EIA-568-B.1 Commercial cabling standard TIA/EIA-568-B.2 Twisted pair media cabling standard

  8. Definitions • AWG- (American Wire Gauge) the measured diameter of the wire. • Cat- (Category) describes the performance of the wire. Cat5 is rated to 100Mhz used for 10/100BaseT. • PBX- (Private Branch Exchange) Private phone network which allows services inside of the building. • 10BaseT- Base data rate for LAN connections and cable allowed length. • Plenum- Specifications for cable to protect the wires inside of the bundled cable from environmental capabilities. The Flame Test is also included in this standard. • EIA/TIA- Electronic Industry Association/ Telecommunication Industry Association
