  1. IB English 12 World Literature Assignments 1 and 2

  2. The World What??

  3. World Literature – Assignment 1 • Comparison and analysis of TWO works from the following list: • A Doll’s House • The Metamorphosis • Waiting for Godot Explore links and relationships between the two, and examine literary aspects common to both Individual insight and original analysis

  4. World Literature – Assignment 1 1000-1500 Words. (IB Gods say as close to 1500 as possible without going over.) ANY text used in this paper MAY NOT be used in Assignment 2! You develop your OWN topic and focus for the comparison and analysis. No 2 people may have same topic.

  5. World Literature – Assignment 1 Tips For Success: Develop an original and narrowed topic Write about something that YOU find interesting! Find natural links and connections between the texts and explore them Focus on the use of language, style, and how the author conveys meaning to the reader or audience

  6. World Literature – Assignment 1 Be aware of the assessment criteria – the categories and requirements should look vaguely familiar! I will only offer general pointers and feedback on one draft, I am not permitted to give specific editing advice or direction, as this is an ASSESSMENT.

  7. No Problem!

  8. World Literature – Assignment 2 • Choose one option – 2a, 2b, or 2c • You may use ANY text not used in WL 1 Waiting for Godot A Doll’s House The Metamorphosis Pedro Paramo Chronicle of a Death Foretold

  9. World Literature – Assignment 2 • Whichever option you choose, it must: • NOT involve a text used for World Literature Assignment 1 (WL 1) • Be 1000-1500 words (as close to 1500 as possible without going over.) • Be your own original topic or area of focus, preferably be about a different aspect than your first paper (e.g. characterization vs. symbolism). • Demonstrate how well you have read, understood, and interpreted the texts

  10. World Literature – Assignment 2 • Option 2a – Comparative Study • Compares one World Literature text with one text from the IB English syllabus written in English • Similar process and skill set to WL 1 • Choose a topic and focus that delves into the meaning and language of both texts • May NOT use any text used in WL 1

  11. World Literature – Assignment 2 • Option 2b – Imaginative or Creative • Base your work in one of the World Literature texts NOT used in WL 1 • Develop a statement of intent to discuss and clarify your analysis and perception of the original work, the task you will undertake and a justification for why - to be included in the word count & counts for half the marks • Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the original work

  12. World Literature – Assignment 2 • WL 2b – Imaginative or Creative • Must develop original thoughts and directions, rather than repeating what is in the original text • Avoid the temptation to either “improve” the original, or to “fix” the ending • Must be plausible and consistent with original work Very hard to do well, very easy to do poorly. Be careful!!

  13. World Literature – Assignment 2 • Option 2c – Detailed Study • Analysis of passages or a full essay on a text • May analyze any one World Literature text NOT used for the WL 1 essay • Focus on close reading and analytical writing • Allows you to fully develop an argument and idea on a specific text or passage • Allows you to delve in to the cultural elements of the text

  14. World Literature – Assignment 2 • Option 2c – Possible Formats • Formal Essay on a Text (I don’t recommend this…easy to do a mediocre job) OR • Analysis of a Key Passage OR • Analysis of TWO Key Passages OR • Commentary on an Extract

  15. World Literature – Assignment 2
