  1. The Lies We Believe Lie #3 “It is easier to avoid problems than to face them.”

  2. There are two groups of people when it comes to problems: the avoiders and the facers. The avoiders ignore problems until they go away or get worse and they are forced to face them. Those who avoid their pain usually end up with more pain in the long run. Those who face the problems and pains save themselves a great deal of unnecessary suffering.

  3. The Road Less Traveled Psy. Scott Peck “Fearing the pain involved, almost all of us, to a greater or lesser degree, attempt to avoid problems. We procrastinate, hoping that they will go away. We ignore them, forget them, pretend they do not exist … We attempt to get out of them rather than suffer through them. This tendency to avoid problems and the emotional suffering inherent in them is the primary basis of all human mental illness.” Quoted in Lies We Believe

  4. Overcoming the Lie • EMBRACE DELIGENCE. The hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy man will be put to forced labor. PR 12:24 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. PR 13:4 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. PR 14:23

  5. The Diligent Rule • The diligent responds to problems and pain – One tree at a time One day at a time One step at a time The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

  6. The diligent know problems get worse when ignored. A problem solver is worth a great deal. • The diligent look for God’s help in the doing. God is in the details! Where are you? • The diligent know that to gain wisdom, one must first get knowledge and understanding.

  7. 2. EMPLOY DISCIPLINE. A Parents Misguided Love “I am most concerned that too many parents today are unnecessarily rescuing their children from problems in misguided love powered by this lie. When parents make a habit of rescuing their child, the child begins believing this lie too – and it soon becomes a deeply ingrained “truth.” These children, though, haven’t been done a favor. They’ve been deprived of chances to develop the appropriate coping skills they’ll need when life in all its unavoidable pain hits them head-on in adulthood. I firmly believe, barring certain severe situations beyond the child’s ability to cope, that children need to be responsible for facing their own problems.” Dr. Chris Thurman, The Lies We Believe

  8. He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds discipline is honored. PR 13:18

  9. Embracing Discipline • It is the child’s spirit that must be brought under control. • Allow children to deal with pain and problems on their own. • Recognizing that choices = consequences = growth and maturity. • Sheltering children from consequences teaches them avoidance. • Experience is a great teacher. • Take advantage of teachable moments. A man of great wrath will suffer punishment; for if you rescue him you will have to do it again. PR 19:19

  10. 3. ENCOURAGE DELIGHT. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. PS 1:2 PR 1:20-33 PR 3:21-26 PR 5:14

  11. God makes his wisdom available in His word. • God pours out his spirit on those who delight in his counsel. • When we delight in God’s word, it is life to our soul and grace to adorn our neck. • We walk safely when we walk in the word. • We will have confidence when we delight in God’s word. • Delighting will keep you from ruin.
