  2. Do Next Answer in complete sentences: 1. Are the keys on the computer keyboard in alphabetical order? Why or why not?

  3. Today • You will be able to • Describe the history of the keyboard • Tell me what the keyboard’s name is • List the homerow keys • Tell me why typing at least 35 awpm is important

  4. The Typewriter • Invented by Christopher Latham Sholes • Marketed by the Remington Arms Company in 1873 • QWERTY arrangement used to keep keys from jamming • No one ever imagined typing would be faster than handwriting, which is about 20 wpm!

  5. The Keyboard • The keyboard is named QWERTYbecause those are the first 6 letters on the keyboard • The QWERTY keyboard was invented to keep the keysfrom sticking • It is important to type at least 20wpm because that is as fast as we can write. • Our goal is a minimum of 35 awpmsince that is the average speed.

  6. Typing Technique • Touch typing is typing without looking at your fingers • Benefits of touch typing are that you will be able to type faster since you know where the keys are and you won’t have to take your eyes off the copy • A keystroke is when you press a key on the keyboard • A touch typist places his or her fingers on the home row keys.

  7. The Home Row Keys asdf jkl;

  8. Keyboarding Speed • Speed is measured in words per minute (wpm). • wpm is an average speed of how fast you can type in one minute • Accuracy is often expressed in a percent. It is how often you type the correct letters. • The accuracy goal that we are looking for is a minimum of 90% • awpm is your average adjusted speed based on your accuracy. • This is what we look at when we are tracking keyboarding speed.

  9. Do at Home • Write at least three complete sentences: What are some things that could help you type faster? Be sure to use an MLA heading!
