OHS Act • To ensure for Healthier and Safer Workplaces • Ensure Employers and Employees understand their roles and responsibilities as stipulated in the Act. • Must be regarded as the minimum compliance requirement. • Stipulates penalties for any person who contravenes or fails to comply with Act

Examples of Unsafe Acts • Not wearing P.P.E where required • Not following rules and procedures • Removing of machine guards • Not following Safe Working Procedures • Horseplay • Using defective tools and equipment • Operating without authority or outside scope of training / competencies • Wearing of incorrect P.P.E

Examples of Unsafe Conditions • Spillages • Defective tools and equipment • Poor housekeeping • Inadequate ventilation • Inadequate guards or barriers • Inadequate or improper protective equipment • Inadequate or excess illumination • Poor stacking and storage practices • Defective vehicles / cranes / trucks etc.

Risk Assessments • Must be conducted and approved by client prior to any work commencing • Risk Assessment must be discussed and signed-off by all person involved with that particular job that they understand the risks associated with the job. • When a risk/s that is not on the Risk Assessment document are identified during the “work in progress” process the work must be stopped, the Risk Assessment document updated accordingly and must be re-discussed with all persons involved and signed off accordingly.

Personal Protective Equipment • All employees shall wear the required PPE as and when required • Employees shall reported any defective PPE • Corrective action shall be taken against Employees who fail to wear the required PPE • Ensure that you wear the correct PPE for the job you are doing • If you are not sure ASK!!!

Authorization / Using of equipment / Vehicles / Tools / Conducting work etc. • Only appointed/trained/authorised persons are allowed to operate Cranes or construction vehicles • Only use or work with equipment for which you have received training on • Work inside your scope of authority – i.e. Crane operator operates crane, erector erect steel and not other way around • Inspect equipment before use and report any defects immediately and remove from service until repaired

Authorization / Using of equipment / Vehicles / Tools / Conducting work etc. (Cont.) • 100% tie-down shall be maintained at all times when working at heights • All work and height work shall be supervised at all times, no work will be conducted without the supervisor being present • Ensure all barricading is maintained or erected when required • Ensure work permits are obtained when required, prior to the work commencing.

Duties ofEmployees • Responsible for own health and safety as well as persons who may be affected by his/her acts of omission • Assist employer to maintain a healthy and safe work environment • Follow instructions • Report all unsafe conditions • Report any incident / injury on the same shift • Attend training provided • Take care of PPE issued to him/her

  21. Right as an Employee • The right to refuse to work when your Health and Safety is placed under jeopardy

  22. Duties of Employer • Identify Hazards • Manage and control • Provide training • Duty to inform • Enforce • Comply with legislation

  23. Emergency Procedures • Sound the alarm and evacuate the area immediately. • Proceed to your assembly point (don’t run) and stay there. • A Head count will be conducted by the Evacuation Marshall. • Wait for further instructions from your Manager before proceeding back to your workplace.

  24. NB! ZERO – Tolerance Rules • Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on duty • Not wearing correct PPE as and when required. • Not following lawful instructions. • Not following Safety rules and guidelines. • Operating equipment without being trained, authorised and appointed to do so. • Not reporting an injury or incident on the same shift

  25. Personal Hygiene • Do not eat with dirty hands • Wash hands before smoking • Wash hands before and after using the toilet • Shower daily

  26. Waste Management • Do not litter on site • Do not through stompies / cigarette buts on the ground • Dispose of waste in the correct bin Plastic in Plastic bin, paper in paper bin etc. • Do not dispose of diesels, oils etc. via toilets, sinks etc.

  28. Causes of Air Pollution • Smoke from factory chimneys • Exhaust fumes • Smoke from fires

  29. Causes of Water Pollution • Factories dispose their waste into water bodies or rivers • People bath or wash cloths in water bodies • People dispose of liquid waste in drains toilets or sinks

  30. Causes of Noise Pollution • Traffic / vehicles • Load music • Machines that are used within factories such as grinders punches etc. • Generators etc.

  31. Causes of Land Pollution • Traffic / vehicles oils spills etc. • Waste generated and hazardous waste by people • Disposing waste any where and not at waste dumps • Deforestation of our land
