  2. NEA’s History with GLBT Issues • Since 1857 NEA has crusaded for the rights of educators and children • NEA precedes national human and civil rights movements • In the United States, homosexuality was pathologized as a mental illness until 1973 • NEA establishes the GLBT Caucus in 1980’s

  3. NEA’s History with GLBT Issues • In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court bans discrimination against GLBT persons in schools. • The NEA creates a Task Force on Sexual Orientation in 2001 • Fairfax County Schools, Fairfax, VA – 1989

  4. NEA’s History with GLBT Issues • Family Life Education re-writing sex-ed curriculum K-12 (1989-1996) • National Protests • Approved “What if I am Gay” as a required video in all 9th grad class rooms (15,000 views by students per year)

  6. History: National Climate • In the United States, homosexuality was pathologized as a mental illness until 1973 • In 1998 federal district courts in Ohio and Utah support anti-discrimination for GLBT in public schools • In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court supports GLBT persons in schools.

NEA Support of Human and Civil Rights • Since 1857 NEA has crusaded for the rights of educators and children • Advocating for human and civil rights for all is part of NEA’s core mission • NEA precedes national human and civil rights movements • NEA establishes the GLBT Caucus in 1980’s • The NEA creates a Task Force on Sexual Orientation in 2001

  8. Why This Campaign The Challenge • bullied students don’t know who to turn to in the school for support and assistance  Our Approach • to connect bullied students with caring adults in the school who can provide the necessary support and assistance

  9. Mission Statement Identify and support caring adults in schools and communities who will listen and act in the interest of bullied students.
