  1. Julius West Middle School April 8, 2014 Introduction to Curriculum 2.0The MCPS K – 12 Math Program

  2. Math Program Goals • Develop students who value math and see it as useful to solving problems and making sense of the world. • Engage all students in experiences that help them reach proficiency (UCARE). • Ensure that all students master the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to be college and career ready. • Prepare students with the desire and skills necessary to have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) or other college-level math courses in high school.

  3. Building a Stronger Foundation Standards for Mathematical Practice

  4. Going Deep in Mathematics Defining Proficiency Understanding Comprehending Concepts, Operations, & Relations Engaging Computing Seeing math as sensible, useful, and doable Carrying out procedures Applying Reasoning Formulating and solving mathematical problems Using logic to explain a solution

  5. Courses That Lead To College and Career Readiness * Including MCPS enrichment and acceleration opportunities ** Investigations in Math *** Advanced Placement Calculus, Advanced Placement Statistics, or other college-level courses

  10. Curriculum 2.0Key Messages • Conceptual understanding facilitates the acquisition of procedural fluency. • The goal when working with operations is fluency with understanding. • The mathematical expectations within the C2.0/CCSS mathematics indicators require a deeper understanding by both teachers and students.

  11. Curriculum 2.0 Shift from Information Transmission Model to Comprehensive Mathematics Instruction Model

  12. Topics of Study in Math 6 2.0: * Ratios and Proportional Relationships Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. The Number System Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Expressions and Equations Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Geometry Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and Probability Develop understanding of statistical variability. Summarize and describe distributions. * The topics of study listed above may not necessarily be taught in the order listed.

  13. C2.0 Algebra 1Structure • Unit 1: Relationships between Quantities and Reasoning with Equations • Unit 2: Linear and Exponential Relationships • Unit 3: Descriptive Statistics • Unit 4: Quadratic Relationships • Unit 5: Generalizing Function Properties

  14. Assessing the New Standards • Maryland is a member of a test development consortium of states––the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). • The PARCC assessments will replace the MSA in Grades 3–8 and the Algebra 1 HSA. PARCCalso will have a Geometry and Algebra 2 assessment. • The baseline year of assessment is planned for 2014-2015. • PARCC assessments are expected to be more challenging than MSA and HSA. • Learn more and see examples of test questions: www.parcconline.org/

  15. Compare MSA to PARCC Questions Grade 5 MSA Question

  16. Compare MSA to PARCC Questions This PARCC item measures understanding of the same concept a grade earlier (Grade 4) and with greater depth

  17. Compare HSA to PARCC Questions HSA Algebra

  18. PARCC Algebra 1

  19. As always, we want our students to question what we tell them, not just accept it.
