  3. Why do we need a PDP? • To improve patient outcomes • Focus learning on needs • Provide clear and ‘bite-sized’ objectives • Provide evidence for revalidation • To allow evaluation of learning

  4. How do we know what we need to learn? • Data eg PACT • Consultation analysis • CBDs, COTS, Mini-CEX assessments and exams • Audit • Reading • Central and local directives • Meetings • Feedback from patients and colleagues • SEA • PUNs/DENs/log diary

  5. What makes a good PDP? • Aims related to identified learning needs • Relevant • Contains balanced learning needs • Challenging/stimulating/motivating • Clear aim relating to knowledge, skills or attitudes • Evidence for learning can be collected • Contains SMART objectives

  6. SMART objectives • Specific • Measurable • Achievable • Relevant • Time bound
