Before We Begin… • Summer School information and registration will be available in April or May. • Remedial Courses: courses for students unsuccessful in a semester course with a mark of greater than 35%. Remedial courses are 2 weeks long. • Acceleration Courses: courses for students who have not previously taken a particular course or who did not earn a 35% in the course during the school year, or wishes to upgrade their mark (above 50%) Acceleration courses are 4 weeks long. • Dates: Summer school is offered in the month of July. It typically begins after the Canada Day weekend. • Some acceleration courses fill quickly – be prepared to register when information becomes available. • If you were unsuccessful in a course in semester one and plan to go to summer school, you may need to see a Guidance Counsellor to add the grade 10 course for your timetable next year! Do so as soon as possible!

Our 2018– 2019 On-LineCourse Calendar! • A course calendar provides you with information about the school, graduation requirements, general information, courses available to students. • Important planning charts (Department Flow Charts) are included as well as web sites to assist with your academic planning. • To access, go to doc.dcdsb.ca; select the STUDENTS link and click GUIDANCE • Click on the Course Levels and Calendar tab on the left; select DO’C COURSE CALENDAR

  4. How Do I Graduate? Students wishing to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma are required to: • Earn 30 Credits • Pass the OSSLT (Spring, 2019) • one morning, two booklets of one hour each • students will be prepared for the test. Preparation includes a mock test in your grade 10 English class. • Complete 40 Hours of Community Service

The Six Compulsory Courses • Religion • There are two Religion courses to choose from: Christ and Culture Christ and Culture: Religion through the Arts • English • Math • History • Career Studies and Civics (0.5 credit, each course 9 weeks long) • Science *** Courses in Grade 10 are offered at the Academic, Applied, Open and Foundations Level. In Grade 11 these levels will change to University, College, Open, Workplace

Optional Courses • Students select two optional courses • You must select an Arts credit (Drama, Visual Arts, Music or Dance) in grade 10 if you did not earn an Arts credit in grade 9 • Physical Education (Male and Female) • Students can select the regular gym class, the Fitness class or the Hockey Course. In the fitness class students run most days of week with two of the days being devoted to long runs. Students participate in weight training and other cardiovascular activities. Alternate Courses • Alternate courses are used if one of your optional courses is not available or if a course is cancelled.

  7. NEW COURSE FOR 2018-19:Introduction to Aesthetics • TXJ2O1 • Hairstyling, make-up and nail techniques • New classroom to be ready this coming semester • This course will satisfy Group 3 credit required for graduation

  8. What Level for Grade 10??? • Academic level (D) recommended for students working at level 3 (75%) or higher in grade 9. Consider the learning style that brings you success! • Students may move from grade 9 applied to grade 10 academic in the areas of English and Science but you should achieve level 4 in the grade 9 applied course • To move from applied Math in grade 9 to academic math in grade 10, you must complete a nine-day transfer course in summer school • Your level for grade 10 History must match your level for grade 10 English • Speak to your grade 9 teacher about the appropriate level for grade 10 • Review your level choices after receiving your mid-term report card

Post-Secondary Planning • It is never too early to research post-secondary options. • Don’t forget the four pathways • Work • College • Apprenticeship • University • Refer to the Guidance link on the DO’C web site to access important post-secondary web sites that will help you research post-secondary schools and programs. • Use www.ontariocolleges.ca and the Ontario University Program Requirements chart to help you determine if specific high school courses are pre-requisites for post-secondary programs. • Each college and university has a web site with valuable information. Go on a campus tour!

The On-Line Course Selection Process • To access Career Cruising, go to the DO’C web site (doc.dcdsb.ca); select STUDENTS and then select the GUIDANCE link. • Select Course Levels and Calendars • There will be two links to Career Cruising • Career Cruising Log in • Career Cruising for Parents (available to all) Username and Password posted with the link. • Select Log In and log in with your individual username and password. Refer to the Course Selection brochure for assistance • Username: DCD-(Student Number) • Your student number is on your ID card • Password: Date of Birth (mmddyyyy) or the password you selected when you first logged in. If you have not changed your password, you will be asked to do so.

Handing In Your Course Selection Documents • Date: Thursday, February 22, 2018 • Students will be called to the library in alphabetical order • Hand in: • Course Request Sign Off Sheet (with parent signature) • Student Activity Fee ($75). • Two ways to Pay: • Online banking: pay online, print receipt bring it in on February 22 • Chequescan be post-dated to May 1, 2018. • Course selection sheet will then be handed to a Guidance Counsellor to review.

Things to Remember • Choose courses wisely as discretionary changes are not made. • When selecting courses consider graduation requirements, post secondary plans, interests and abilities • Read course descriptions carefully. Speak to teachers to learn more about a course. • Option Sheet will not be collected without the Student Activity Fee

REMIND • Stay connected with Guidance by signing up for REMIND, a free, safe and simple messaging tool • 3 ways to use REMIND; email, text or APP TEXT: @docclass21 to:289-204-2198 • It will be the primary mode of communication with the Guidance Department for your years at DO’C • You will receive important date reminders, presentations, scholarships, community service opportunities, graduation, etc
