Gilded Age brought on a total lack of regard for the worker • Unions created (AFL, Knights of Labor etc.) • Goal was: Better pay, improved conditions, shorter hours • Methods used: Strikes, boycotts, demonstrations • Government responded • Taft-Hartley- No mandatory union membership • American Plan- Business provide benefits to NOT join unions Union History

  4. Closed Shops • Hires only union members (Illegal) • Union Shops • Workers must eventually join the union • Agency Shop • Don’t have to join, but must pay fees Types of workplaces

  5. Labor contract negotiated between union and owners • Issues • Wages & Benefits (Seniority) • Working conditions • Job security • Methods • Mediation (3rd party) vs. Arbitration (Legally binding) • Strikes Collective Bargaining
