• Environmental problems have been recognized as an important source of threats to human survival. • The environment is now considered to be a significant security issue.

The need for access to natural resources has increased and more people are making greater demands upon those resources. We will carry out a strategy of synchronized planning, implementation and development in terms of economic and urban and rural development and environmental protection.

  7. The green movement arose out of a re-evaluation of western industrial civilization. Although the Reformation, the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution were all contributing factors to the birth of western industrial civilization, the root cause was colonialism, which permitted the large-scale relocation of developed countries’ economic and social contradictions. To ensure this relocation could proceed smoothly, capitalism created a set of international rules to protect its own interest, and environmental issues are a case in point.

  8. Developed countries account for 15% of the world’s population, yet use over 85% of its resources. They raise their own environmental standards and transfer resource-intensive and polluting industries to developing countries; they establish a series of green barriers and bear a little environmental responsibility as is possible. In the end, the green movement found that any problem cab be relocated, except pollution, because we all live on the same planet.

  9. Speech by Clinton at Peking University 1998 In the near future, if present energy use patterns persist, China will overtake the United States as the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which are the principle cause of global warming. If the nations of the world do not reduce the gases which are causing global warming, sometimes in the next century there is a serious risk of dramatic changes in climate which will change the way we live and the way we work, which could literally bury some island nations under mountains of water and undermine the economic and social fabric of nations.

Adhere to the basic state policy of environmental protection “the polluters-pay” policy Policy of tightening up environmental management Undertake treatment within a prescribed limit of time Nationally designated Eco-Demonstration Region Nationally Designated Garden City Eco-demonstration region Multipurpose use of three types of wastes

  12. The World Faces Environmental Problems The world faces a complex variety of problems in the immediate future. Many of these problems are environmental in nature, relating to growth in the human population and associated demands for land, food and energy. The global economy is fueled to a dominant extent by fossil sources of energy-coal, oil and natural gas.

  13. Environmental issues resulting from coal consumption include air pollution and notably, particulates, nitrates and sulfates--- with important implications for both environmental and human health. Consumption of fossil fuels contributes a large and growing source of CO2 with implications for changes in global climate. The conference will review the challenges we face over the coming decades commenting on strategies that might be implemented to minimize potential negative consequences.

  14. The environmental Problems of China In 20 years, China has achieved economic results that took a century to attain in the west. But we have also concentrated a century’s worth of environmental issues into those 20 years. While becoming the world leader in GDP growth and foreign investment, we have also become the world’s number one consumer of coal, oil and steel--- and the largest producer of CO2 and chemical oxygen demand emission.

  15. With the rise of globalization, developed countries have transferred their industry to developing countries as a form of environmental colonialism. In China, pollution has been moved from east to west and from the city to the rural areas. The rich consume and the poor suffer the pollution. The economic and environmental inequalities caused by a flawed understanding of growth and political achievement, held by some officials, have gone against the basic aims of socialism and abandoned the achievements of Chinese socialism.

  16. Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which man pollutes his surroundings. Man dirties the air with gases and smoke, poisons the water with chemicals and other substances, and damages the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. Man also pollutes his surroundings in various other ways. For example, people ruin natural beauty by scattering junk and litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles that fill the air with disturbing noise. Nearly everyone causes pollution in some way.

  17. People may differ in what they consider to be pollutant, on the basis of their assessment of benefits and risks to their health and economic well-being. For example, visible and invisible chemicals spewed into the air or water from a plant nearby pose a danger to the people nearby and other animals and plants. However, if the installation of expensive pollution controls leads to the reduction of productivity, the unemployed might feel that the risks from polluted air and water are minor weighted against the benefits of profitable employment. The same level of pollution can also affect two people quite differently --- some forms of air pollution might be a slight annoyance to a healthy person but life threatening to someone with emphysema or another respiratory disorder.

  18. Water pollution reduces the amount of pure, fresh water that is available for such necessities as drinking and cleaning, and for such activities as swimming and fishing. The pollutants that affect water come mainly from industries, farm, and sewerage system. Industries dump millions of tons of waste products into bodies of water each year. These wastes include chemicals, wastes from animals and plant matter, and hundreds of other substances. Wastes from farms include animal wastes, fertilizers, and pesticides. Most of these materials drain off farm fields and into nearby bodies of water. Sewerage system carry wastes from homes, offices, and industries into water.

  19. Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing mankind today. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of soil reduces the amount of land available for growing food. Environmental pollution also brings ugliness to man’s naturally beautiful world. The environmental condition to certain extent determines the prospect of economic development of an area. Benign environment and effective environmental protection measure is a crucial guarantee of sustainable development of economy.
