  3. Who are you? • Did I say your name correctly? • Do you have a nickname?

  4. Guided notes? Why and how? • Guided notes: A support for note-taking • How does it work: • I will provide an outline and delete key facts and elements • It is your responsibility to fill in the outline • If there is more space, write more • If there is less space, write less • What are symbols? • Pencil symbol – big idea, overarching concept to remember • * - a cue to fill in information • Key vocabulary is bolded • A finger symbol means that you should explore this concept more in-depth on your own

So, what’s this course all about? • Overarching Goal: • Study in-depth the post-toddler period to the age of 10 • By whose standards? • NAEYC • CEC • Units of study: • Background information and theory • Studying Child Development • Factors that Influence Child Development • Early Childhood Development (3-5) • Middle Childhood Development (5-10) • Common Disabilities and Intervention

  6. Textbook? Do I need it? • Yes. • Berk, L. E. (2008). Infants and children: Prenatal through middle childhood. 6th Edition. Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

  7. When is the instructor available? • You are encouraged to talk with other students to resolve questions or concerns except in cases where this might result in academic dishonesty • The instructor is available by appointment for questions and concerns. You can also stop by anytime – 114 Alison West • Emails will be returned within 48 hours during the week. • There is no guarantee that emails will be returned promptly between 5:00 pm Friday-9:00 am Monday and during breaks

  8. Do I HAVE to show up for class? What is expected of me when I’m here? What if I’m absent? • In a word – yes. • 72 points of your grade are based upon attendance and participation • Complete assignments, take notes, and PLAY! • Class structure • 10:10 – 10:20 – General Housekeeping and Announcements • 10:20 – 10:55 – Lecture or Play • 10:55 – 11:00 – Finish index card assignment • Index card assignment • Place index cards in the “in” slot. They will be returned in alphabetical order under the first letter of your last name • Absent? Fill out absentee form online on SAKAI (will review how to do this next class) • No cell phones, no texting, no computers!

  9. So I fudged it a little…. • Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. This means YOU! • Incomplete summaries of assignments • Made up data • Plagiarism • Purchased papers • Not pulling your weight on group assignments • Yes, I know. And yes, I do refer to Judicial Affairs.

  10. Hey, thanks for being so upbeat. So what else are we doing for this course? • Quizzes (120 points) – 5 tries to pass each quiz • Group project and poster session (120 points) • Lab Preschool observation Assignment (160 points) • Operational Definition and Data Collection (30 points, revisable) • Observation and Summary (130 points) Your group project and lab preschool assignment must have a completed rubric attached – SELF EVALUATION Fridays are play Fridays!

How will I be graded for this course? • All assignments have a point value. • To determine your grade: Divide the total number of points you earned by the total possible points you can earn. • Ex: so far, you’ve done two quizzes and gotten 18/20 on both. Your attendance at about 45/48. Right now, you’ve earned 63/68 points. • I round up grades at .5% • No, you can’t get extra credit.
