  2. Introduction • The Cross is the focal point of the Bible • Acts 3:14-15 • What is our relationship to the cross?

  3. What some present at the crucifixion saw as they stood beneath the cross • Roman soldiers saw a robe to be gambled for • The priests saw a trouble maker • Some women saw their Savior taken away • One thief saw another criminal like himself

  4. What some present at the crucifixion saw as they stood beneath the cross • The other thief found hope for heaven • Joseph of Arimathea saw a body to be buried • A mother saw her son die • God saw the cruel sacrifice of his only Son

  5. What do we see as we stand beneath the cross?

  6. We See He Enormity Of Sin • The real depth of sin is seen as we look at the cross of Christ • Is. 53:4-6 • Heb. 2:9 • Rom. 3:23

  7. We See Our Own Helplessness • Rom. 10:3 • Lk. 17:10 • Only by humbling ourselves and accepting salvation through Christ can we be saved • Jn. 14:6

  8. We See God’s Power To Forgive • Rom. 1:16 and 1 Cor. 15:1-4 • The Gospel is God’s power to save-but the gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus • The Death, burial and resurrection of Christ is God’s power to save!

  9. We See God’s Power To Forgive • Justice demanded death • Ezek. 18:20 • Animal blood could not take away sin • Heb. 10:4 • Yet the shedding of blood was required • Heb. 9:22

  10. We See God’s Power To Forgive • Christ was a lamb without spot and blemish • 1 Pet. 1:18-19 • To be forgiven means that our sins have been: --removed from us--blotted out--forgiven

  11. We See The Inexhaustible Love Of God • God has the power to forgive and offers a way for man to be forgiven • This shows His great love for mankind • Rom. 5:7-9

  12. We See The Inexhaustible Love Of God • Jn. 3:16 • 1 Jn. 4:10

  13. The Love Of God • Could we with ink the ocean fill,And were the skies of parchment made,Were every stalk on earth a quill,And every man a scribe by trade,To write the love of God above,Would drain the ocean dry.Nor could the scroll contain the whole,Though stretched from sky to sky.

  14. Conclusion • We started this lesson with the depth of human sin and ended with the height of divine love • 1 Jn. 4:19 • We show our love by obeying God’s commandments

  15. Conclusion • Jn. 14: 15, 21 • 1 Jn. 5:3 • Love made it possible for God’s own son to pay the penalty for us and bring about our forgiveness

  16. When I Survey The Wondrous Cross • When I survey the wondrous crossOn which the Prince of glory died,My richest gain I count but loss,And pour contempt on all my pride.
