Melt-Away • A Chemical Engineering Design Unit • Curt Blimline • Science Department Williamsburg High School, Williamsburg, OH • The Problem Each and every winter in cold climates, snow and ice on everything from highways to walkways poses danger to individuals. Products have been developed to mitigate the impact of icy conditions on various surfaces with different degrees of effectiveness. How do we balance environmental concerns and the corrosiveness of these products with the benefits of their application? • Product Presentation • Academic Standards Design a deicing product that includes a blend of chemical compounds and market it through a commercial. • Identify questions and concepts that guide scientific investigations; • Design and conduct scientific investigations; • Use technology and mathematics to improve investigations and communications; • Formulate and revise explanations and models using logic and evidence (critical thinking); • Recognize and analyze explanations and models; and • Communicate and support a scientific argument. • Intermolecular chemical bonding • Types and strengths • Implications for properties of substances • Melting and boiling point • Solubility • Stoichiometry • Molar calculations • Solutions • Create a product label describing the chemical composition of the deicer along with its performance expectations. • Present a 60 second video commercial of the deicing product. • Present the research that supports the claims of the product. • Unit Activities • Activity 1 • How Cold is Freezing? – determining the freezing point depression for a solute • Activity 2 • It’s All About the Particles – determining the relationship between number of particles and freezing point depression • Activity 3 • Synergy? – determining the effect of mixing solutes on the freezing point depression • Activity 4 • Melt-Away – design project • References • Your Text Goes Here.
