  1. “A Terrible Coward” By: George Manville Fenn

  2. Coward: a person who lacks courage, esp. one who is shamefully unable to control fear and so shrinks from danger or trouble. 1Webster's New World College Dictionary. Cleveland, Ohio: Wiley Publishing, Inc, 2010. Dictionary.

  3. Courage: the attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful, instead of withdrawing from it.1 1Webster's New World College Dictionary. Cleveland, Ohio: Wiley Publishing, Inc, 2010. Dictionary.

  4. The setting of the story is a small fishing village on the Atlantic Ocean. There is a place called Carn Du where swimmers will dive from to show their courage against the strong waves.

  5. People in the village were calling Harry Paul a terrible coward because he would not jump from the huge rock at Carn Du. He thought it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t want to show off. Mark Pennely said that he, himself, was the best swimmer there ever was. Mark starts to drown in the water, as he is showing off, and Harry is there. He doesn’t want to save him, but Mark apologizes and says he will try to be another man. Harry jumps in, off of Carn Du, and saves Mark Pennely’s life.

  6. This book is a great way of showing leadership. It was a selfless act to risk his own life, to save someone elses.

  7. It is a good book for Teen Leadership because these traits that Harry has such as being a leader, showing selflessness, and helping others is something we all need to learn to do.

  8. He shows leadership by putting away all the awful things that Mark has done to him, and instead of seeking revenge, he saves his life.

  9. “You have always mad yourself my enemy, and tried to ruin me in the sight of others. It is to you I owe the character of being the greatest coward in Carn Du. You said I was a miserable cur—a dog. Every dog has his day, and now it is mine. It is my turn now, and I mean to have revenge.” – Harry Paul1 1Fenn, George. A Terrible Coward.
