Mars. Corey Fritz Jackson Merrick Daniel Lumsden. Terrestrial. Mars is a terrestrial planet meaning Earth-like. It is made of rocks or metals and has a hard surface. Terrestrial planets have a molten heavy metal core, few moons, and geological feature like volcanoes and craters .

Terrestrial • Mars is a terrestrial planet meaning Earth-like. • It is made of rocks or metals and has a hard surface. • Terrestrial planets have a molten heavy metal core, few moons, and geological feature like volcanoes and craters. • it's very bright and therefore easily spotted in the night sky. Because of this, we don't know who exactly discovered Mars

Basic Properties • Mars has a tilt of 25 degrees on its rotational axis. • Mars spins counterclockwise on its axis. • A day on Mars is 24 hours 37 minutes and 22 seconds. • One year on mars is 1.88 earth years or 686.98 days. • Mars is 141,600,000 miles away from the sun. • Temperatures reach a high of 70*F, but a low of -225*F at night.

Basic Properties cont. • Mars’s mass is 639E21 KG, which is .107 of Earth’s Mass. • Mars density is 3.94 g/cm3, while Earth is 5.52 g/cm3. • Mars is less dense due to its size and mass compared to Earth. • Mars’s surface is very rough, it is a terrestrial planet that has land feature such as: Volcanoes, Mountains, Frozen Water, and crater impacts.

Planet Structure • Mars atmosphere contains 95.9% Carbon, this is similar to Venus. • Discoveries of Methane, Argon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere show evidence of previous life or geochemical activities. • Mars does not have any rings. • Mars is a surface planet, it contains two regions of geography. The lowlands were formed by lava and sedimentary rocks. The highlands, are ridges that are heavily cratered due to impacts.

Moons • Mars has two moons: Phobus and Deimos • Phobus is the larger of the two moons, with a volume of 27 km by 22 km by 18km. • Phobus orbits Mars 3 times a day. • It is estimated that within 50 million years, Phobus will collide with Mars. • Phobus has no atmosphere and scientist believe it was a captured asteroid.

Moons cont. • Deimos is the smaller of the two moons, with a volume of 15km by 12km by 11km. • Deimos orbits Mars every 30 hours. • Deimos is believed to be a captured asteroid from the outer asteroid belt. • There is very low gravity on the moon, so meteorite impacts leave behind little ejecta, but there are points of regolith up to 100 M deep.

  8. Mars History • Mars discovery dates back to the Ancient Babylonians, they originally named it after their god of fire. • The name Mars, however is credited to the Ancient Romans who named it after the god of war. They viewed war as blood shed, which was similar to Mars’s Hue.

  9. Mission • On July 14th 1965, the Mariner 4 took a fly-by picture of Mars. It was the first picture of another planet. • Mariner 9, which was launched in 1969, was the first orbiting satellite and revealed there may have been water on Mars’s surface.

  10. More Missions • Viking 1 and 2 both landed on Mars in 1975 to become the first two spacecraft to land on another planet. • On November 26, 2011 the NASA rover Curiosity landed on Mars. It is there to look for past or present habitable areas on Mars.
