Government Agencies • conduct research and oversee programs providing care to the public (especially the elderly and children) • establish health care polices • examples are: • Local health departments (eg. York Region Public Health) • Ontario agency for health protection and promotion (provincial agency) • Public Health Agency of Canada (national agency) • World Health Organization (international agency)

  3. Local Health Departments • 36 public health departments in Ontario • administer health promotion and disease prevention programs • inform the public about healthy life-styles, communicable disease control including education in STDs, healthy growth and development including parenting education • provide immunization • carry out restaurant inspections • provide selected screening services • send information (statistics) about communicable diseases to provincial and national agencies Toronto Public Health

  4. Ontario agency for health protection and promotion (OAHPP) • a centre for specialized research and knowledge in public health • focuses on the areas of infectious disease, infection control and prevention, health promotion, chronic disease and injury prevention, and environmental health.

  5. Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) • promote health • prevent and control chronic diseases and injuries • prevent and control infectious diseases • prepare for and respond to public health emergencies • through research, programs and services, the goals of PHAC are to bring about healthier Canadians

  6. World Health Organization (WHO) • sponsored by the United Nations • primary goal is to help all people attain the highest possible levels of health • collects international health statistics and information on disease and publishes information • provides training for medical personnel to improve general health or combat specific diseases

  7. Volunteer and Nonprofit Health Agencies • supported by private contributions and fund-raising events • most deal with a specific disease or group of diseases • provide funding for research and promote education on information learned through research • may also provide special services to victims of disease by purchasing equipment or providing treatment centers Canadian Lung Association
