  1. Eleanor RooseveltAn Amazing Influence Kimberly Petiti Period 2

  2. Memorable First Lady • Eleanor Roosevelt is a memorable First Lady because she changed traditions and greatly involved herself in politics and in the issues of America.

  3. Memorable First Lady (Continued) • Ms. Roosevelt was influential because she fought for human rights, stood up for women’s rights, and separated herself from all of the previous First Ladies of America.

  4. The Fight For Human Rights • Eleanor had great determination to fight for humans and ultimately make a difference. • Some argued that she was overstepping her boundaries because a President’s wife was not to express their opinions.

  5. The Fight For Human Rights (Continued) • Regardless of what others told her, she did not give up. • This determined attitude caused her to serve as a delegate at the United Nations Commission and it gave her a large role in writing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

  6. The Fight For Women • Eleanor worked hard to make sure that women were treated fairly, had equal rights, and were more involved in politics. • People were not too keen on the idea of women getting more involved in politics, but she still fought for them.

  7. The Fight For Women (Continued) • Because of Eleanor’s hard work, women became more educated about politics and were given more rights. • She inspired other women to work hard to achieve their goals when she became the first woman to hold a cabinet-level position.

  8. Broken Silence • It is an unwritten law that First Ladies were to be quiet and not speak up for what they believed in. • Ms. Roosevelt was a little worried about breaking this tradition, but she still pursued her desire to speak out for the things that were important to her.

  9. Controversy of the Broken Silence • Her opponents argued that she should stick to the original First Lady tradition and not speak out, just like all of the previous First Ladies did. • She did not listen these opinions, and set a precedent for future First Ladies, and became the first President’s wife to hold press conferences.

  10. Summary • In conclusion, Eleanor Roosevelt left a huge impact on our country because of her determination to give human more rights, fought for women’s rights, and broke the long-lived tradition of the First Ladies. All in all, Ms. Roosevelt truly was an influential person!
