  1. New course: Modern Chinese Literary Translation Introduction to literary translation from Chinese to English. We will translate modern works from the early 20th century to the present, including fiction, essays, poetry, and film (subtitling). Literature is great material for translation training in general because it does not use specialized vocabulary and the works are rewarding to read closely. Translation not only sharpens your comprehension of written Chinese but also enhances the precision and subtlety of your English writing. The course is mostly conducted in English and does not substitute for advanced language courses like Media Chinese or Business Chinese. Prerequisite CHIN 4020 or permission of instructor. CHIN 5559 Fall 2013 Charles A. Laughlin cal5m@virginia.edu Tuesdays 3:30-6:00pm 042 New Cabell Hall
