  1. Purposeful Involvement Leslie Poe, Graduate Assistant for Student Organizations Karin Klinger, Assistant Director for Student Activities Baylor Bound Orientation 2006

  2. Why should YOU get involved? • Persistence to successful graduation • Marketability to prospective employers after graduation • Social engagement in a new community • Have a little fun!

  3. Seek out involvement opportunities • Opportunities for purposeful involvement won’t come to you…you have to be intentional about seeking them out! • Learn about the opportunities available to you: • www.baylor.edu/student_activities • Late Night @ the SLC • Interest Meetings

  4. Purposeful Involvement is not… • Expecting to be the President of the group within your first semester… • Hovering in your comfort zones… • Being Overly involved… • Failing to reflect and evaluate… • Getting involved for the sake of involvement…

  5. You Know You’re Overly Involved When… • Your list of co-curricular involvements is so long that it makes Santa’s Naughty and Nice list look like a Post-It • The yearbook editor knows you by name after typing it in under nearly every organization’s picture • Your cell phone name memory bank has reached its limit • After filling your semester calendar, you realize that you have neglected to include going to class • Your parents call your roommate to see if you’ve decided to study abroad without telling them

  6. You Know You’re Overly Involved When… • You buy a new pack of underwear every time you go to the store…who has time to do laundry? • You laminated all of your textbooks…now you can study in the shower! • You’ve participated in so many ice-breaker games with new organizations that when you wake up in the morning, you stand on your top bunk and fall backward, yelling to your roommate, “I trust you!!!!”

  7. What is “Purposeful Involvement?” • Baylor has 330 chartered student organizations…that doesn’t mean you should to join 330 groups! • Be selective • Be intentional • Be goal-oriented
