  1. SUGGESTIONS?

  2. Ten SUGGESTIONS or Ten COMMANDMENTS? • “67% of Americans cannot name five of the Ten Commandments” – (USA Today) • How many can you name? • Take the Ten Commandments challenge.

  3. The Ten CommandmentsChallenge • PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM.

  4. God Spoke All These Words • Exodus 20:1- the preamble to the Ten Commandments: “And God spoke all these words.” Many times people flip past the title page to get to the first chapter. But that’s a crucial mistake because these words tell who is speaking.

  5. “God spoke all these words.” • Who is speaking here? God! • What did he say? “All these words.” • So where do the Ten Commandments come from? • FROM GOD!

  6. “God spoke all these words.” • These are not: • “Ten Suggestions for a Better Life” • “Ten Ways You Should Consider” • “Ten Habits of Highly Successful People” • “Ten Ways to Climb the Ladder” • “Ten Ideas That Might Work For You.” • NO!

  7. God spoke all these words. • God spoke all these words—therefore they have lasting moral authority. • God spoke all these words—therefore we don’t have to wonder about his intentions. • God spoke all these words—therefore we must take all of them with utter seriousness. • God spoke all these words—therefore we must give these words our primary attention.

  8. VALID FOR TODAY. • What, then, do we find when we come to the Ten Commandments? • Here at last is an objective standard for right and wrong. • Here at last is our “place to stand” upon which we can make proper moral judgments. • Here at last is a universal set of moral principles. • —They have never been repealed. • —They have never been surpassed. • —They are as valid today as they were 3,000 years ago.

  9. There's much more to these commands than meets the eye. • They're not just God's way of preventing us from having a good time. They're designed to protect us, our families and our communities. They're a guide to transforming the way we think, what we do and how we live.

  10. Thou Shall Not Miss Them!

  11. I. You shall have no other gods before me. II. You shall not worship false gods. III. You shall never take my name in vain. IV. You shall keep the Sabbath day holy. V. Honor your father and your mother. VI. You shall not murder. VII. You shall not commit adultery. VIII. You shall not steal. IX. You shall not lie. X. You shall never want what belongs to someone else.

  12. There’s another way of looking at the TEN COMMANDMENTS . We can turn the commandments into beatitudes. They would look something like this: Blessed are they who put God first. Blessed are they who need no substitutes for God. Blessed are they who honor God’s name. Blessed are they who honor God’s day. Blessed are they who honor their parents. Blessed are they who value life. Blessed are they who keep their marriage vows. Blessed are they who respect the property of others. Blessed are they who love the truth. Blessed are they who learn the art of contentment.

  13. Or only ten suggestions?

  14. Rediscovering the Commandments

  15. A journey through the Ten Commandments. 1-4: The commandments about God. 4-10: The Commandments about us.

  16. 1-4: The commandments about our relationship with God. To enhance our relationship and communication with our God.

  17. 4-10: The Commandments about the relationship with one another. To enhance our relationship and fellowship with people around us.

  18. THE FIRST COMMANDMENT

  19. I. You shall have no other gods before me. Modern Version: You shall consider God first in ALL things. GOD MUST BE YOUR PRIORITY IN LIFE ABOVE ANYTHING ELSE.

  20. In ancient days, people worshiped statues created by man. They were believed to have supernatural powers. Today, many people feel they are immune to this law; however, they still have other “gods” in this world. They worship by putting our energy into things that are not of God, or they simply have “no God.”

  21. Consider to yourself: 1) Is there a thing in my life that I put before God, that I treasure more than God, that I seek more than I seek God, that I spend more of my energy with? 2) Do I believe in God or do I live as if God didn’t exist?

  22. B. Some activities rob us of our attention to God and His priorities. Lots of activities seem to be interesting as they occupy our time, but they do not help us fulfill our long term goals or purpose. Other activities actually force us in the wrong direction and are harmful. Each person must be single-minded and focused, not letting idle activities become distracting gods.

  23. This is not as much about how much time we spend with the activities in our lives. Certainly we have to go to work, to school, take care of children and many other things in our lives. As it is with the directions underneath all of these things. It has more to do with the reasons we do all of them, and which the goals and purposes we have in life.

  24. Is God supreme in all these things? Does He have the priority? Is it for Him that we do these things? Do we care about Him?

  25. WATCH OUT! • The spirit of what you worship will take control of you. Whatever you worship will seize your mind, your body and destroy your soul, if it is not God. • If you play with tarot cards, and with the things of the occult, or allow your kids to learn Witchcraft 101 with teacher Harry Potter, the prince of darkness has authority to control you. Jesus said: he came to rob, to kill and to destroy. • Satan has authority in darkness. If you go to darkness you are under his authority.

  26. DO THE TEST. • What is controlling you? The spirit of the world? • 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Fatheris not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. • (1 John 2:15-17)

  27. Is money controlling you? • “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Luke 16:13)

  28. CONFESS AND REPENT 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  29. DECLARE GOD IS THE ONLY GOD IN YOUR LIFE
