Numeric Video Images Sound Text & more… That which is collected, observed, or created in a digital form, for purposes of analysing to produce original research results. http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/information-services/services/research-support/data-library/data-repository/definitions http://www.channelprosmb.com/imagelib/contentitem/26065/39e706a46ad531be--6da92a71-132cec09cc9-64bf684136669.jpg http://backyardskeptics.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/video.png http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/iconhive/multimedia/256/sound-icon.png http://www.iconarchive.com/show/rumax-icons-by-toma4025/camera-icon.html http://0.tqn.com/w/experts/Italian-Language-1584/2010/09/Image-Historical-Text.jpg

  4. Research Data Management Research Data Management: encompasses the entire data life cycle, and includes data collection, organization, storage, retrieval, and preservation over time.

  5. Why manage & share your data? • Promotes higher quality research and peer review • Opens the door to further research • Demonstrates effective stewardship of publicly- funded data • Ensures long-term preservation of and access to data • Builds in procedures to ensure anonymity/privacy

  6. Other factors to consider… • Some scientific publications require that data be available for the scientific community before the article is published • A growing number of funding agencies require that data be deposited in a public archive

  7. Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management “Data should be collected and stored throughout the research project using software and formats that ensure secure storage, and enable preservation of and access to the data well beyond the duration of the research project” “Data management planning is necessary at all stages of the research project lifecycle, from design and inception to completion” “Research data resulting from agency funding should normally be preserved in a publicly accessible, secure and curated repository or other platform for discovery and reuse by others” “Research data must be managed in agreement with all commercial, legal and ethical obligations” “Data should be managed in accordance with the most appropriate and relevant standards and best practices, while recognizing that these are in a state of rapid evolution” http://www.science.gc.ca/eic/site/063.nsf/eng/h_83F7624E.html?OpenDocument

  8. Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management • Responsibilities of RESEARCHERSinclude: • incorporating data management best practices into their research; • developing data management plans to guide the responsible collection, formatting, preservation and sharing of their data throughout the entire lifecycle of a research project and beyond; • following the requirements of applicable institutional and/or funding agency policies and professional or disciplinary standards; • acknowledging and citing datasets that contribute to their research; and • staying abreast of standards and expectations of their disciplinary community. http://www.science.gc.ca/eic/site/063.nsf/eng/h_83F7624E.html?OpenDocument

  9. Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management • Responsibilities of RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS include: • providing an environment that enables world class data stewardship practices; • providing access to data repositories that securely preserve, curate & provide access to research data; • ensuring compliance with ethical, legal, commercial, and Tri-Agency requirements; • providing guidance on best practices and development of data management plans; • recognizing data as an important research output • promoting the importance of data management • developing their own data management policies, in accordance with policies, principles, laws, and best practices http://www.science.gc.ca/eic/site/063.nsf/eng/h_83F7624E.html?OpenDocument

  17. Research Data Management http://guides.library.queensu.ca/rdm Portage DMP Assistant

  18. Portage DMP Assistant The DMPASSISTANTis a web-based, bilingual, data management planning tool made available to all Canadian researchers through the Portage network. • Walks you step-by-stepthrough key questions about data management. • Provides guidance and examples at each step. • You only answer questions relevant to your research. • DMPs are living documents – you are encouraged to review & revise throughout your project Poweredby Portage DMPExpert Group & & Libraries http://portagenetwork.cahttp://reseauportage.ca

  19. So how does the DMP Assistant help? The DMP Assistant walks you through a checklist of questions • Data Collection • Documentation & Metadata • Storage & backup • Preservation • Data Sharing & Reuse • Responsibilities & Resources • Ethics & Legal Compliance And provides guidance along the way

  20. Turn to the Portage Network web page for more information about the shared stewardship of research data…

  21. Queen’s University Library Research Data Management Service • We can help you with: • Planning for data management • data management plans & grant applications

  22. Queen’s University Library Research Data Management Service • We can help you with: • Planning for data management • data management plans & grant applications • Preparing your data • coding, formatting, anonymizing, and more • Documenting your data • describing your data so others can understand and use it • Archiving your data • finding an appropriate repository or archive • Making your data discoverable • promoting open access, indexing, assigning DOI’s

  23. Don’t underestimate the benefits of making your data ‘discoverable’… https://www.visitgrandforks.com/uploads/items1/item1084/p17ap6mrab187817h9j671j0n180s6.jpg
