Background • 14 IANAS Academies have nominated water specialists to act as national nodes to the IANAS Water Network. • 4 Meetings • 1st Bogota/March 2005 • 2nd in Guarulhos/July 2006; • 3th in Santo Domingo 2008 • 4th In Nicaragua, 2009 • Two main types of activities a) Meetings : • A joint IAP/IANAS Regional Workshop for the Americas has been organized in 2006 • 1st IAP/IANAS Capacity Building Training Course for the Americas in August 2008 b) CREATE a consolidated technical group that can assist their national governments and society in the effort to enhance local water management capacities

IANAS Water Programme • To establish National Water Committees that will help Academies provide advice to governments and society, thus enhancing their social relevance; • To prepare white papers providing a strategic view on national water resources; • To implement capacity building activities; • To discuss new perspectives and innovative solutions for water management; • To set the stage for the future publicizing and implementation of the recommendations of the IAC Study Panel on Water.

  5. 3th MeetingRESULTS • Papers presented were useful to • Discuss in general the water problem • To highlight main issues in each countries • To detect main global and local Solutions • But • Were highly heterogenic • The problem on both lack of information and when available lack of reliability was detected • A content was produced for all the water country profiles • Time was allocated to LOOK FOR AND VALIDATE the information in order produce homogen reports

IANAS Water Programme • To establish National Water Committees that will help Academies provide advice to governments and society, thus enhancing their social relevance; • To assist to the policy makers by providing analyzed and validated information • To prepare white papers based on useful and information than can be “universal "acceptable providing a strategic view on national water resources; • To implement capacity building activities; • To discuss new perspectives and innovative solutions for water management; • To set the stage for the future publicizing and implementation of the recommendations of the IAC Study Panel on Water.

Exportation of water trough produce (virtual water). • Water and industry. Industrial uses of water. Industrial pollution. Water productive efficiency (Industrial IVA/m3.yr) • Water for human use: quantity, quality and access. • Levels and geographic distribution of pollution/contamination. Impacts of agricultural, industrial and human pollution: water contamination. • Water in urban areas: volume, access and availability. Quality of the water supply service (continuity, for instance) Water distribution efficiency. Percentages of water loss. Price of water in urban and rural areas • Water and municipal wastewater treatment. Coverage, percentages and applied technologies for urban and rural areas. Sewer coverage Treatment costs.   9. 4th Meeting of the Focal Managua, Nicaragua, 30-31 May  2009. • To present a first version of the white papers • Hosted by Nicaragua through Dr. Katherine Vammen, Vice-Director of the Nicaraguan Centre for Water Research and the team leader for CARA ( Central American Water Resource Management Network ) at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. • .

  10. 4th Meeting of the Focal Managua, NicaraguaRESULTS • 17 Water Countries profiles were presented • To produce them, some Academies have collaborated with national experts to produce the best reliable information • Once the similar problems were discussed it was decided to • Produce a Declaration (The ManAGUA Declaration to be endorsed by this board, 14 WR signed) • To publish the countries water profiles in English and in Spanish (one of this as an electronic book) • To proceed to produce white papers through discussion with the local government and stakeholders using the information contained on the country’s profiles

Brazil and Mexico : Books • Brazil as an activity independent of IANAS • Mexico as part as IANAS-AMC activities • With CONAGUA (Mexico Federal Water Management Commission) sponsorship • With contributions from • 80 authors, where at least 1 authors per chapter is a young scientist • 14 states • 40 institutions

  15. Budget • 1 project for meetings presented tp IAP was not accepted • Partial support for the countries water profiles to be printed AND translated • At national level not all WFP will be able to obtain support for their book
