  9. Sell the program • talk to students about why it works • have male role models talk about why they listen to audio books • have students try the decoding example on Ms. Hassard’s page

  10. Establish Reading Routines • First part of every class • Twenty minutes • Allow students to choose class or group novels • Track student eyes to ensure they are reading along in their novels

  11. Establish Response Routines • always engage in conversation about the book • use graphic organizers • use Bitstrips for reflection • use twitter for discussion • have them write based on prompts

  12. Writing and Engagement Samples

  13. Benefits • improved student engagement • improved responses in written format • students visualize therefore are better able to remember • students may get distracted but can still listen • students spend less time decoding which leads to increased comprehension • even students who claim to prefer print reading only, indicate that they remember more with audio

  14. Challenges • students may be reluctant at the beginning thinking that they don’t need this to help them read - teacher has to sell them on the idea that audio reading is for everyone • students may not track with their eyes; they may use their phone etc. - teacher has to watch/encourage compliance, but there are always students who won’t engage in any class. However, once students get hooked on the book, the majority will follow along.
