The Evanston Galleria has a lot of history. Only until recently has this building been called the Evanston Galleria, before then, it was known as the Evanston branch of Marshall Field’s. • The Galleria is located on the corner of Church & Sherman. • The building has several entrances located on its West, South and East sides of its facades.
Neighborhood • The building was a 17th Century French Renaissance design by the architectural firm Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White. • Around the 1920’s the city of started expanding and in 1929 Marshall Field began construction on the building. This area of town was where the wealthy would shop. It was a place where the wealth went to see and be seen. In 1980’s the growth potential and customer preferences for stores located in suburban malls forced Marshall Field to close its doors. In 1986 the store was sold to developers for conversion into apartments, and in 2002 the apartments were converted into condos now known as the Evanston Galleria. • The area now is a mostly retail, with apartment and condos.
Many of the original features were restored or recreated to emphasis the original style of the building. The most prominent and well known feature of this building is the newly restored and working Marshall Field & Co. store clock, this reminds visitors of the luxury and magnificence that the department store represents.
A lot has been refurbished including the exterior marble and limestone, as well as the bronze and brass, finishes of the extensive metalwork, the elevators were brought up to date, but kept the same design that one would have seen in the old store. There are new chandeliers and a gold leaf stenciled border, which features an “M” pattern that was taken from an engraved design in the marble trim above the store’s elevators. The lobby and hallway were also refurbished so that the art deco style of the time is clearly noticeable. Lastly, the original terrazzo floors were returned to their original splendor. In 2002, the final change for the building occurred, when the apartment units were converted into condominiums. These condos are now the Evanston Galleria.

Flowers intrigue Valentino and he has used them in prints, in silk, and for petal shapes of bodices or skirts. He says there should be a minimum of detail, but he does put in a lot of bows on his garments, at the waist or on a shoulder. He is truly the only designer who combines French embroidery and impeccable taste, with Italian fabrics, workmanship and glamour.
