  1. ZTE Corporation. Consideration of tgah power saving for functional requirement Date:2011-05-05 Authors: Slide 1

  2. ZTE Corporation. Abstract • This presentationproposes some considerations on power • saving functional requirement related to use case category 1. Slide 2

  3. ZTE Corporation. Use Case Category 1 • 1a: 11/17r5, slide 7 Smart Grid - Meter to Pole • 1c: 11/253, Environmental/Agricultural Monitoring • 1d: 11/260r1, slid 4 Industrial process sensors • 1e: 11/17r5, slid 17 Healthcare • 1f: 11/241r0, slide 3 Healthcare • 1g: 11/241r0, slid 5 Home/Building Automation • 1h: 11/242r0, slid 2 Home sensors Slide 3

  4. ZTE Corporation. Battery life example for Sensor • An traditional sensor controller with 1200mAh battery (real case!) • Working cycle: 10s sleeping slot with 10ms working slot; • 3uA for sleeping while 40mA for working; • Power consumption: • Working part: 0.01/10h*40mA=0.04mAh; • Sleeping part: (1-0.01/10)h*0.003mA=0.002997mAh • Cycle life: 1200/(0.04+0.002997)=27908h=1162day=3.18Y • What is the Cycle life result if working slot to be 20ms? • 1200/(0.08+0.002994) = 14459h= 602day = 1.65Y • Nearly half of original value! • So power saving features is very important to be described in the functional requirement for sensor use cases. Slide 4

  5. ZTE Corporation. Some considerations on power saving functional requirement of Use Case Category 1 • Well, from previous example, duty cycle needs to be considered to be key requirements for 802.11ah enabled sensors, • Channel access model/mechanism should also be carefully evaluated when we have thousands of sensors connected with one AP, what a busy channel! • Network management should be considered too as sensor also needs contention window to communicate with AP; • Battery life will be an important requirement for sensor scenarios also, while its value varies in large range given the different use cases. • Suggest further investigation on sensor power consumption values.
