  2. Background • Author: James, the brother of Jesus. The pastor of the church in Jerusalem. • Date: Perhaps before 49 A.D., which may make it the earliest book of the New Testament. • Setting: Persecution has fallen upon the church, and many Christians have scattered. • Readers: James is writing to these scattered, Jewish Christians.
