TankReporter 2.0

TankReporter is a product for MISTRAS users based on the graphical engine of NDT In-Structure 1.5 but completely redesigned for the needs of Mistras Services, COE – Above Ground Storage Tanks.

The product is in version 2.0 Beta and it is a desktop application capable to produce API 653 reports. Collaboration between users is possible by exchange of files and/or databases.

Development plan:

  • Web version for better collaboration
  • Support of European Standards

The current version has the following features:

  • Complete visual representation of storage tanks
  • Setup of Tank as an Asset (Geometry and Components)
  • Setup of Inspection including Data Entry (Visual and UT) and Calculations
  • Complete Reporting facilities

Understanding TankReporter (1)

  • The main purpose of TankReporter is to produce API 653 reports for Above Ground Storage Tanks.
  • The report is produced by combine information from
  • Asset
    • Information about the tank like geometry, components, design, etc.
  • Inspection Data (and Calculations)
    • Information about the inspection performed like UT measurements, Visual findings, Photos, etc.
  • Settings
    • Information about Inspectors, Equipment, Owner, etc.



Understanding TankReporter (2)

The Asset is the information related to the tank as a physical entity. Such information are: Dimensions, Geometry, …and Components like Nozzles, Pipes, etc.

The Asset could be saved as a separate object for reuse in next inspections. Asset information could be used in other applications like Noesis for AE or UTIA for UT.

The Inspection Data are the collection of data related to the specific inspection. The data contains a very wide range from UT and Visual findings up to Calculations.

The System Settingsare data and parameters the are used for faster filling of the inspection data and customization of the reports.

The Report is produced by combine the above information. In some cases, users could create reports without define the Asset.

The application permit the partial filling of the data and arbitrary filling of data (First Asset, then Inspection or vice versa).

The application is synchronize information between Asset and Inspection Data. For example if a Nozzle is not defined in the Asset but defined it during the inspection, the nozzle info will be updated in the Asset.

TankReporter – Structural Parts
  • The basic information of a tank could be defined using a single formwhere all the data of the tank could be entered. The data includes General information (Number, Owner, Location, Design Standard, Product, Manufacturer, etc.), Dimensions (Diameter, Height, Maximum Filling Level, Capacity, etc.), Geometry (Foundation, Bottom, Shell, Fixed and Floating Roof, Seal), Access and Coating Information.
  • The following major structural parts of the tank are supported:
  • Floor
  • Shell
  • Fixed Roof
  • Floating Roof – Floating
  • Foundation
TankReporter – Tank Bottom
  • For Tank Bottom, seven common patterns are available. For each pattern, the user could change several parameters to easily defined the actual plates configuration
  • Horizontal brick pattern with vertical ends
  • Diamond pattern with vertical ends
  • Cross pattern
  • Vertical brick pattern with horizontal ends
  • Vertical brick pattern with divisions
  • Scanned image
  • Grid pattern

Further adjustments could be applied in each plate using a grid like plate layout form.

Note the capability to define the annular plates using a circular or polygonal scheme

TankReporter – Tank Shell

For Tank Shell, a grid like pattern is available. This pattern could be adjusted easily to reproduce the plates of the shell.

TankReporter – Tank Roof
  • For Flat Fixed or Floating Roofs, the patterns of Tank Bottom could be applied.
  • For Fixed Roofs we also support the following types:
  • Conical
  • Umbrella/Dome
  • Elliptical
  • Note that the plate setup could be edited in any time after the initial setup
TankReporter – Components (1)
  • Further to the above structural parts presented above, the TankReporter let user to define and display several Tank components. These components are either actual structural components (like nozzles and pipes) or virtual (like photos and defects) that help users to complete the reporting process.
  • The components offered are:

  • Internal Pipes
  • Patch Plates
  • Sumps

TankReporter – Components (2)

All components could be defined by select the type from the toolbar and click in any point of the tank surface. Final the user could filling optional data. Note below typical forms for Nozzles, Defects and Photos.It worth to mention useful information like Service, Type of Defects, Caption in Photos, etc. Also the option to enter comments and recommendation in any component.

TankReporter – Components (3)

Additional the components could be defined/edited using the Tank Properties form, where the components are presented in spreadsheet like format. For all components the next operations are available: Add, Edit, Remove, Show, Move.

An interesting feature is the Photos tag (Yellow Spheres in the previous screens): When user click on the photo tag, the photo stored in the specific point is pop-up with all comments and recommendations entered before.

TankReporter – TML (1)
  • Thickness Measurement Location (TML) could defined in any part of the tank. The user could enter manual locations using mouse or data entry form. Additional, several common predefined patterns are available.

  • Bottom and Roof
  • Radial

After entering the thickness values in the TML, user could display color plots using the any color pallete.

TankReporter – Data Representation (1)

The tank data entered using the setup forms are presented in several representations. The different representations are denoted by the tabs in the bottom of the screen.

Particular, TankReporter offers 3D plot of the Tank, 2D plot of the tank (detailed and multiple), Grid output and Report output.

The Structure 3D page presents the tank in the 3D space. The side bar allows users to control the visibility of the structural parts and components. A number of toolbars and mouse operations are available for manipulation of the scene (zoom, rotation, pan, Standard Views, Cursor trace, etc.).

The Structure 2D page presents the tank in the 2D space either with focus in one structural part or by presenting all parts. The floor and roof are presented as top view and shell as an unwrapped projection.

TankReporter – Data Representation (4)

The Report page presents the tank data (Asset), tables and drawings in HTML format ready for copy into MS word. The sections presented in the following screen are currently available:

TankReporter – Export to AutoCAD

Export to AutoCAD (or other similar application) is supported through DXF files

All details could be modified since every part of the Tank and all Components are exported in different layer for further editing.

TankReporter – System Settings
  • TankReporter saves in a database the System Settings. The settings are data and parameters the are used for faster filling of the inspection data and customization of the reports.
  • The System Settings are:
  • Clients Setup
  • Equipment List
  • Inspection Personnel
  • Material Stresses
  • Offices Locations
  • Check Lists
  • Pick List Setup
  • The settings are stored in separate database that could be imported/exported by one click for distribution between users.
  • Further a restore scheme based on time stamp is available.
TankReporter – Clients Setup (1)

The Clients Setup Form is the place to Setup Clients for use in the TankReporter.

The hierarchy of data is: Clients - Facility – Customer Reps.

Note the to define templates (custom reports and conditions) per client.

  • Several tools are available (similar tools are available in all forms)
  • Navigation between records.
  • Add/Delete records
  • Editing of records
  • Sorting based of any field
  • Import/Export to text/excel files
  • Advanced filter/search based on any simple or complex criteria
  • Report of all clients
  • Last modified date information

TankReporter – Equipment List
  • The Equipment List Form is the place to Setup/Review the Equipment List that could be used in the inspection.
  • All tools (filters, reports, etc.) mentioned before are available
  • Points of interest:
  • Fields: Owner, Calibration Status, Calibration Due Date and Maintenance Status
  • Easy first level filter/sorting by Equipment type or Lab.
  • Coloring of equipment that are Inactive (Grey), that their calibration will expire soon (Yellow) or their calibration have expired soon (Red)
TankReporter – Inspection Personnel
  • The Inspection Personnel Form is the place to Setup/Review the personnel that could participate in the inspection.
  • All tools mentioned before (filters, reports, etc.) are available.
  • Points of interest:
  • Fields: Certifications API 653, API 510, API 570, UT, MT, LT, VT, ET, AE, RT… and relative certification number, expire date, copy of the cerification.
  • Coloring for personnel that are Inactive (Grey), that his certification will expire soon (Yellow) or his certification have expired soon (Red)
TankReporter – Material Stresses
  • The Material Stress Form is the place to Setup/Review the material database. The material propertied will be used in the Calculations.
  • All tools mentioned before (filters, reports, etc.) are available.
  • Points of interest:
  • The materials are categorized by Specification (API 653, EMUA 159) or Custom.
TankReporter –Offices Location

The Offices Location Form is the place to Setup/Review the Office Information.

All tools mentioned before (filters, reports, etc.) are available.

TankReporter – Check List Setup

In the Check List Setup Form, the user with appropriate rights could be modify the available check lists, by add/delete/edit sections, subsections or entries.

A side tree helps the visualization of the hierarchy and easy navigation.

Note that the user rights are not fully defined yet.

TankReporter – Pick List Setup

The Pick List Setup Form is the place to Setup/Review all the parameters of the application.

All tools mentioned before are available.

For example, user could setup the number of days that will be used for Calibration warning message or setup specific condition codes per customer.

TankReporter – Inspection Data
  • The Inspection Data have been split into three categories:
  • Inspection General Info
  • Inspection Data
  • Calculations
TankReporter – Inspection General Info
  • The Inspection General Info is the place where all the basic inspection information could be enter.
  • Inspection Start and End Date
  • Report Preparation Date
  • Tank Number
  • Inspection Type
  • Specification used
  • Office conducting the test
  • Client Information
  • Report name
  • If the Asset information is not present, by checking the Create Asset check box the graphical representation of the Tank will be created by complete simple wizards.
TankReporter – Tank Data

The Tank Data Form is the place where all the Tank Basic Information could be populated. Most of the information are automatically imported by Asset information. Users could modify any secondary information here (like Coating, Manufacturer, etc.). The secondary info will be used in the report.

TankReporter – Equipment/Personnel Selection Form

Select Equipment/Personnel for the specific job by just click the plus symbol (+)

TankReporter – Job Information

Define the Job Information by entering the PO, Work Order Number and Report Number. This is essential for the report.

TankReporter – Check List Form
  • Populate the necessary check lists.
  • Select check list (the application propose the appropriate based on General Info)
  • Navigate in the different sections
  • Fill the condition
  • Write the Findings
  • Propose any recommendation
TankReporter – Summarized Recommendations

The application initial collects the recommendations from the filled check lists.

Then the user could edit or enter more

Specific template per customer can be used.

TankReporter – Import Inspection Photos

Import Photos

Press the + symbol and select photos from your disk.

The photos will be saved in the application database.

Enter Caption (for the report) and add any comment.

Press the + symbol and select which parts and details will be added in the drawings.
