BIOSOPE – macro-particles 1-      Scientific objectives

BIOSOPE – macro-particles 1-      Scientific objectives. We are proposing two projects : A - Estimation of the stock of particulate matter (PM) > 100 µm in the studied water column and the relationship between PM’s spatial pattern and the bio-physical data.

  1. BIOSOPE – macro-particles 1-     Scientific objectives We are proposing two projects: A- Estimation of the stock of particulate matter (PM) > 100 µm in the studied water column and the relationship between PM’s spatial pattern and the bio-physical data. B- Estimation of the distribution and of the diversity of meso- and macrozooplankton. Relation between their size-dependent distribution and ecosystem state. NET SAMPLING.

  2. Methods–ZOOSCAN and OPC for treatment of zooplankton Triple net ZOOSCAN OPC

  3. Easy 3 steps dataacquisition 2) Digitize and analyze thepicture in one mouse click  <15 min 3) Collect the sampleback without lostor degradation 1) Pour and distributethe sample in the cell

  4. 200 µm Image digitization 20% of the whole image Each picture is 17,500 x 7,000 pixels and contains hundreds of animals

  5. 1 mm Image analysis

  6. Size distribution (or temporal evolution) of the different faunistical groups determined by the ZOOSCAN

  7. 3- Sampling needs Dig-UVP will be mounted on the CTD (hopefully) we need a dry lab place for a large desktop computer, printer and a laptop computer Zooplankton net sampling – according to the schedule we need a storage place for the fixed samples preservative = buffered formaldehyde Zooscan/OPC – the treatments will be carried out in France

  8. Results • 15 methods tested and compared • Recognition accuracies higher than 80% are difficult to obtain • Our new method (dvf, discriminant vector forest) is both efficient and reasonably fast
