  2. FEMA Map Modernization • FIRM = Flood Insurance Rate Maps • FIS = Flood Insurance Study • Accurate information about flood risk is the first step in preventing and reducing losses. • Today’s flood maps are outdated and limit their usefulness.

  3. FEMA Map Modernization • Nationwide Project • $1 Billion Budget • Started in 2004 • Convert Paper Maps to Digital Maps

FEMA Map Modernization • Why Modernize? • Better identifies your flood risk • Improves accessibility/reliability of flood maps • Better maps • Based on current ground elevations (1980’s versus 2000’s) • Utilize locally maintained street maps • Digital maps – Geographic Information System – Websites • More timely updates of flood maps

Appeals Period Timeline • Communities received New D-FIRMs– Aug. 2009 • FEMA Community Coordination Meeting – Oct. 2009 • FEMA publish two notices in local – Early 2010 • 90 Day Appeal Period – 2010 • Letter of Final Determination • 6 month compliance period • DFIRM maps may become effective in the late Fall of 2010 or Spring of 2011

Protests / Appeals • Protest Process – Non Technical Data • Road Locations and Names • City Limit Lines • Drawing errors • Appeal Process – Technical Data / BFE • Data Incorrect • Error in the Analysis • Substantiated by a Licensed Professional Engineer • Prepared at the Property Owner’s Expense • All Appeals and Protests submitted through Cities or County depending on property location. • Local agency will forward to FEMA
