  2. Context

  3. Research Changes… • Radical Method Change in Research • From printed material and „real“ experimental lab to a variety of digital artifacts and tools • New Infrastructures & Services Required • Storage, computing, virtual tools, subject-specific data models, funding consultancy > „Knowledge Infrastructures“

  4. Bielefeld sets out to point the way for a new quality of research services • Bielefeld Data Informium • Service-Concept for Research and Education jointly developed by Researchers, Library, Computing Centre, Mgmt.… • Crossing intra-organisational boundaries • More user-centric, more customized

  5. Services fortheResearch Life Cycle Knowledge Services in theinstitutionalinfrastructure Researchers Students • eLearning-Systems • (SCM/UB) • Organizing • Studying • (BIS) • etc. Publikation Services Read Information Services • Digital Content • Access Licences • Search Technology • Catalogues • etc. Write • Publication • Server • Journal • platforms • Bibliography Management • Publication • funds • etc. Desk Research Measure Cite Analyze Publish Visualisize Review Data Services • „Informium“ (New !) • etc. • Portal • Individual for Researchers, Students & Faculty • Accounting • Person/Org.-Services • etc. (BIS) Mgmt.

  6. Research Data Management

  7. Needs Questionsresearchersaskabout Research Data Management • How do I prepare a “data management plan” for a grant proposal? • Who is paying the extra work for data curation and who can actually do it? • Who can tell me, if any other research group has solved my data problem? • Are there institutional products and prices for resources (e.g. servers, cloud computing)? • How do I store and archive my data now and differentially for 1, 2, 5 or 10 years? • Is there an institutional data policy, I can refer to in my proposal? • Who is the person or institution to answer my questions for data management? • Are there legal implications with share and re-use or with respect to patents and industry? • Are there ethical implications of my way to handle data? • Who do I approach, if I need subject specific data modeling or technical development? • …

  8. Goal • Transcending Boundaries between research disciplines and methodologies by data re-use and sharing through flexible access policies • Build a Role Model for Institutional Services supporting Research Data Management • Matrix infrastructure connecting disciplinary and internationally • Central support without intervening, conflicting and contradicting existing subject specific practices

  9. Situation: International • Research Data is a „hot topic“ • EU: eInfra; Australia: ANDS; US: NSF/NIH, Data Management Plan, DataNet… • Infrastructure partly existing • WDC-System, CERN, EBI, UKDA/GESIS… • Institutional strategies just starting… • Cornell: Data Staging Repository, Harvard-MIT: MDMC,OFSC Harvard etc.

  11. Situation: Local -- Research • Strong data-driven research, e.g. • Biotechnology: CeBiTec (BRF) • Cognitive Interaction: CITEC • Data-Service-Center for Microdata • Many, many others • IWT: Sociology of Science Studies

  12. Situation: Local -- Strategy • Rectorate supports and encourages research data management plans • Part of the future concept • German Excellence Initiative • In house-funding for pilots • Colloquium „Knowledge Infrastructure“ • Many infrastructure projects in the library • also focused studies on subject-specific req.s

  13. Plans forInstitutional Model Data Experts • Research WSS QuantitativLehrstühle Human Data • Prominent, establisheddatacentres • e.g. CITEC, Data Service Centre • Methodand Data School • e.g. quantitative und qualitative socialscience, experimental procedures, modelling • Accompanying Studies & Discourse • z.B. dataethics, legal aspects, Wissenschaftsforschung • (projects, colloquium etc.) SOT QualitativLehrstühle CITEC Externe Scientific Coordination CIOScholarly Inf. 14. Highlights ofthe Model • Networked data centers of excellent units • CITEC, Graduate Sch., SFBs, Clusters… • Interdisciplinary „School“ for Data-Methods • Quantitative & qualitative Paradigms, Modeling, Technology, Data Science, Scientific Computing, ‚Curation‘ • Reflexive scientific discourse • Data ethics, legal aspects, Sociology of science • Institutionalized data task-force (IRIS) • Bielefeld Data Informium as template for virtual environments • From proposal to operations; specification, customizing, modeling, software, legal issues

  15. ExpectedResults • Novel quality of services that facilitates local and international research across disciplines • Close gearing of research and service units • Efficient Process of Customization • Mixture of permanent and dynamic staff • More security, archiving and scalability • Training and education for data and methods • Coupling with scientific method research, computer science and theory of science
