Introduction • Plastering has been used since the ancient civilizations to construct structures. • Back then, the early men used mud to make them durable and water resistant. • Advancement of science and technology over the millenniums has led to an evolution in plastering as well. • The mud of the early men was replaced by the plaster by the end of the nineteenth century.

  3. Plaster is a mineral coating used for covering rough surfaces of walls, columns, ceilings and other building components. • A thin coat of plastic mortars is applied to make the level of masonry surfaces even and smooth. • The coating of plastic material (i.e. mortar) is termed as Plaster.

Purpose Of Plastering • It gives a smooth and hard surface that could be painted and provide nice aesthetic appearances. • Plaster has been subjected to substantial variations with regards to its composition and its variations. • The widespread use of plaster coating has increased because • It is economical • It is easy to prepare • It is easy to apply

  6. Different Types Of Plastering 1. Cement Plaster • This type of plaster is a mixture of sand, Portland cement and water. It is particularly used for construction work as a binder. • Cement plasteris usually applied in one coat to achieve smooth surfaces internally and externally. • Coat’s thickness also depends on building type or the conditions of a site. • It is mostly suitable plaster for dampness or moist weather.

Lime Plaster • This basically consists of sand, hydrated lime and water. • Lime is used as a binder to give a finish coat. • Lime plaster mortar is prepared by mixing lime and sand in equal proportions. • Little quantity of cement is added to it, to improve strength. • Lime plaster could be used for the restoration and rehabilitation of ancient structures.

Stucco Plaster • Stucco is material made up of aggregates, binder and water. • It is applied as wet and hardens to a dense solid. • Stucco plaster is used as a decorative coating for walls & ceilings and an artistic material in the architecture. • The thickness of stucco plaster is generally three-layered coating process.

Mud Plaster • This type of plaster is prepared with the help of clay, loose soil and cow dung. • All these ingredients are mixed thoroughly and are left for 7 days with a huge amount of water. • Mud plaster is one of oldest and cheapest way of plastering low-cost houses in rural areas. • It is usually applied in two coats.
