Aztec Empire and Inca Empire. Aztec Civilization. Lived on a lake called Lake Texcoco. Tenochtitlan-Aztec city. The Aztec people eventually ruled over what is now Modern Mexico. Conquered people would be slaves, or killed as a sacrifice to the gods. Hernan Cortez.

  2. Aztec Civilization • Lived on a lake called Lake Texcoco. • Tenochtitlan-Aztec city. • The Aztec people eventually ruled over what is now Modern Mexico. • Conquered people would be slaves, or killed as a sacrifice to the gods.

  3. Hernan Cortez • A conquistador from Spain. -Spanish conquerors • landed on the coast of Mexico in 1519. • The Aztec people believed he was a god named Quetzalcoatl. • Montezuma- ruler of the Aztec.

  4. Conquest • Spanish forces seized Montezuma. • The Aztec forces weren’t ready for the Europeans on horseback, with cannons and swords. • Spanish also spread smallpox to the Indians. • Destroyed the entire Tenochtitlan city.

  5. Inca • The Inca were South American people living in the Andes mountains. • Built Roadways through the mountains. • Famous city- Machu Picchu • Quipa- Rope with knots. Kept Inca records. • Like the Aztec Empire the Inca faced European conquest.

  6. Francisco Pizarro • Landed on the pacific coast of South America in 1530 with a 180 men. • Like Cortez, Pizarro brought horses, cannons, and steel weapons.

  7. Goal of the conquests - Pizarro captured Atahualpa he requested that he get all the gold the city had and his life would be saved • However Atahualpa was still executed. • Mercantilism-Economy based exports over imports and having large supplies of gold and silver

  8. Columbian Exchange • Encomienda- granted by Queen Isabella to allow Spanish Settlers to use Native Americans as Labor. • Columbian Exchange- Exchange between Europe and the Americas taking plants and animals. • Columbian Exchange was also the exchange of diseases like small pox.
