  3. Greek Regional Innovation Poles: • Reducing the difference between Greek performance in innovation and the EU average is a high national priority. One promising initiative in five Greek regions is the ‘innovation poles’ launched by the Ministry of Development. The regions to benefit from government funding are Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Western Greece, Thessaly and Crete. • Regional innovation poles are a new way to stimulate innovation in key sectors for the competitiveness of each of five Greek regions. From autumn 2006, each regional pole supports innovation activities such as research projects, technology platforms and technology transfer. • The regions were asked to identify up to three sectors which are critical to their competitiveness.Private sector participation was very much encouraged in setting up the innovation poles. Each pole consists of a wide range of organisations and initiatives including research, development, training, and transfer of technologies.
