APPOINTMENT PROCEDURES • Walk-in Appointments • Students can see me without an appointment before school, during lunch or after school. • Scheduled Appointments • No appointments will be set up between periods or if you show up with a teacher’s pass during class time. • You will receive a pass with a time and date for your appointment • You are responsible for keeping your appointment

  3. APPOINTMENT PROCEDURES • Parent Teacher Conferences • Contact Mrs. Keefer at extension 44397 • Conferences with individual teachers are typically scheduled during the teacher’s planning period. • Conference with all teachers are typically schedule after school on Mondays and Thursdays

  4. MERIT DESIGNATION

SCHOLAR DESIGNATION In addition to meeting the standard high school diploma requirements: • 1 credit in Algebra 2 • 1 credit in Statistics or an equally rigorous math course • Pass the Biology 1 EOC • 1 credit in Chemistry or Physics • 1 credit in a course equally rigorous to Chemistry or Physics • Pass the US History EOC • 2 credits in the same World Language • Earn at least one credit in an AP, IB, AICE or dual enrollment course. • Students who take respective AP or IB Biology and/or US History assessment and earn minimum score to earn college credit are exempt from the EOC requirement for these courses.

SUPERINTENDENT’S DIPLOMA OF DISTINCTION Meet all application deadlines and be accepted into the program • Successfully complete (4) or more AP courses in 2 or more subject areas (successful completion includes sitting for AP Exam) • Score 3 or higher on a minimum of (3) AP Exam • Maintain a 3.0 GPA for AP courses • Maintain a cumulative weighted 3.0 GPA • Complete a minimum of 100 hours of community service • Participate in the SAT or ACT programs in both the junior and senior year (the second year test may be waived with an appropriate SAT/ACT score determined by VCS)

REMEDIATION • Is the student’s responsibility! • Review their academic history. • Meet with their counselor to obtain the report. • If at anytime in their high school career they have earned an “F” in a core subject they are responsible for making up that credit to meet graduation requirements!

  8. REMEDIATION OPTIONS • Odyssey Lab - during & after school • After school lab is open for an hour Monday through Friday • Volusia Virtual School (VVS) • www.volusiaonlinelearning.org • Florida Virtual School (FLVS) • www.flvs.net

COUNTDOWN CALENDAR • September – October • Begin your search for private scholarships. • Apply for admissions to the colleges in which they are interested. • Attend the College Application Day to get help starting or completing college applications on October 2, 2015 in the Media Center. • Take or retake the SAT and/or ACT. • Meet with counselor to arrange remediation of failed courses or 2nd semester dual enrollment at Daytona State College (DSC). • November – December • Register for the Bright Futures Scholarship program after December 1st. – Counselors will help students register at our media center. • Attend Financial Aid Night on December 3rdat 6:00 PM in our auditorium. Bring at least one parent.

  10. COUNTDOWN CALENDAR • January • Meet with Mr. Rivera-Navarro to review graduation plans. Please provide a copy of acceptance letters or emails. • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Be sure to complete it as soon as possible after January 1st. • February • Attend FAFSA workshop – February 23, 2016 in the media center from 4:00 – 7:00 PM

COUNTDOWN CALENDAR • April • Make final decision on college attendance and notify the appropriate admissions office. • Promptly respond to requests for information from the college admissions and financial aid offices at your chosen college. • Pay required deposits for enrollment and/or residence hall. • May – June • A.P. exams • Complete all FLVS or Odyssey course work for credit recovery. • Senior Awards Ceremony – May 19, 2016 at 7:00 PM in Auditorium • Graduation rehearsal – May 25, 2016 at 5:30 PM in the Ocean Center • Graduation ceremony May 28, 2016 Ocean Center at 4:00PM  in the Ocean Center

  12. GRADUATION – CLASS OF 2016 • Graduation Rehearsal – May 25, 2016 at 5:30 PM. • Graduation Ceremony – May 28, 2016 at 4:00 PM.

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS • Identify their top 3-4 college choices. •  Take or retake the ACT/SAT. •  Apply to the college of their choice. •  Know and meet deadlines • for early admission • for regular admission • for financial aid and scholarships • for special programs • for housing •  Fill out an authorization form for release of records. •  Remember – Deltona High School’s CEEB Code is 100 - 423.

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS • Time Line  • Applaud if your student has completed a college application.  • Snap if your student plans to apply before the Thanksgiving break.  • If your student plans to wait until February...practice your nail biting now! • You will kick yourself if your student waits until Spring Break.  • May applicants – fix up your bedroom at home – they’ll need to pay your parents rent!

QUICK NOTES • Residency is determined by the parent/guardian residency status. • Complete a transcript request form and provide a mailing address for private & out of state schools. • Test scores must be sent directly to the college from SAT or ACT. • APPLY ONLINE - Colleges prefer online applications. You can choose to submit a paper application if available, but DO NOT DO BOTH.

COLLEGE VISITS • Several college representatives will visit our school in the Fall • Will share information about their school – entrance requirements, campus life, etc. and answer questions • Will be announced on the morning announcements and students must sign up in advance at the school counseling office to receive a pass to attend

POST-HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS:STATE COLLEGES • Associate of Science degrees: (Two Years) • Accounting Technology, Culinary Management, Dental Hygiene, Hospitality Management, Computer Engineering Technology, etc. • Vocational Certificate: (Generally 18 Months) • AC and Heating Mechanics, Barbering, Cosmetology, Dental Assisting, Fire Fighter, Nursing Assistant, Auto Collision and Repair, Welding Technology • Associate of Arts: (Two Years) • General education credits and pre-requisites to transfer to a state university for a major area of study and complete a Bachelor’s Degree

MILITARY • Recruiters will be visiting our campus throughout the school year. • If your student is interested in finding out more about the different military branches, please let Mr. Rivera know so that arrangements can be made for a recruiter to meet with the student the next time they visit our campus.

FEE WAIVERS & TEST PREP • Free or reduced lunch – Two FREE fee waivers for ACT & SAT • FREE test preparation and score reviews offered through Khan Academy, Kaplan Test Prep Company, and the Princeton Review • The Volusia public library system offers FREE test prep access through ePrep with a library card

  23. ADDITIONAL TEST OPTIONS • ASVAB: Aptitude test to identify your natural skills and abilities. Used as the military entrance exam. • PERT: Post-secondary education readiness test. Used to determine placement in remedial or college courses. • Math score of 97 can be used as a comparative score for the Algebra 1 EOC. • TABE: Measures basic reading, math and language skills for students entering career & technical education programs.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION • Scholarship announcements posted on morning news bulletin. • See Scholarship Bulletin Board in the Counseling office • Bright Futures Scholarship registration will occur in December for all students. • Financial Aid Night on December 3, 2015, at 6:00 PM, DHS Auditorium.

PAYING FOR COLLEGE • Grants: need based funds that are not subject to repayment. • Loans: private & subsidized funds that must be paid upon completion or exit from school. • Scholarships: funds that are awarded based on a criteria established by the benefactor (need, merit, special interest).

  27. CLEAN UP YOUR ACT! Everyone Has Access to Social Media… • Google your student • Remove any questionable you-tube videos links. • Clean up their online identity on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. • Use nicknames for social media – not email addresses! • Their voicemail is a reflection of them. If an admission counselor or potential employer calls, will they make a good impression?
