  1. Sequencing

  2. What is Sequencing? • When events in a text are presented in the order that they happen • Sequence is also called “time order”

  3. Signal Words • Authors often use signal words such as: • First, next, then, last, after, and dates, such as 1995 • These words help the reader identify a sequence of events • Sometimes the reader needs to use clues to figure out sequence when signal words are not used

  4. Why is Sequence Important? • When a text does not go in time order it is much more difficult to understand: • Example: • Then, she slipped on an empty ketchup packet. Last, she had to miss recess while she cleaned up the mess she made. Next, she flew up in the air and dropped her lunch everywhere. Sally was running in the cafeteria.

  5. First… Next, she slipped on an empty ketchup packet. Last, she had to miss recess while she cleaned up the mess she made. Then, she flew up in the air and dropped her lunch everywhere. First,Sally was running in the cafeteria.

  6. Next… First, Sally was running in the cafeteria. Next, she slipped on an empty ketchup packet. Last, she had to miss recess while she cleaned up the mess she made. Then, she flew up in the air and dropped her lunch everywhere.

  7. Then… First, Sally was running in the cafeteria. Next, she slipped on an empty ketchup packet. Last, she had to miss recess while she cleaned up the mess she made. Then, she flew up in the air and dropped her lunch everywhere.

  8. Last… First, Sally was running in the cafeteria. Next, she slipped on an empty ketchup packet. Then, she flew up in the air and dropped her lunch everywhere. Last, she had to miss recess while she cleaned up the mess she made.

  9. It makes more sense with Sequence! First, Sally was running in the cafeteria. Next, she slipped on an empty ketchup packet. Then, she flew up in the air and dropped her lunch everywhere. Last, she had to miss recess while she cleaned up the mess she made.

  10. Let’s Practice! Next, the plant gets water and sunlight. Last, the flower blooms. Then, the plant begins to germinate and grow. First, the seed gets planted in the ground.

  11. First? Next, the plant gets water and sunlight. Last, the flower blooms. Then, the plant begins to germinate and grow. First, the seed gets planted in the ground.

  12. Next? Next, the plant gets water and sunlight. Last, the flower blooms. Then, the plant begins to germinate and grow. First, the seed gets planted in the ground.

  13. Then? Next, the plant gets water and sunlight. Last, the flower blooms. Then, the plant begins to germinate and grow. First, the seed gets planted in the ground.

  14. Last? Next, the plant gets water and sunlight. Last, the flower blooms. Then, the plant begins to germinate and grow. First, the seed gets planted in the ground.

  15. When you put it all together… • First, the seed gets planted. Next, the plant gets water and sunlight. Then, the seed begins to germinate and grow. Last, the flower blooms.
